Hello all,

Are there any problems with this build? Is there anything that could be improved?

Not true. The stock cooler is loud, and sometimes can't handle the heat thrown off by other components in the case.
Also, aesthetics are a thing and his case has a window.

For the price he might as well get one.

@AgentL3r

  • Is the unlocked chip that much more money? If you're trying to save and don't want to overclock perhaps consider getting a Xeon processor instead.
  • I'd get at least a 250gb SSD for the boot drive, 120gb is usually considerably slower.
  • Are you just using the Blue for mass storage? It's only 5400rpm, and will be slower at loading anything you put on it.

Looks pretty solid IMO, the few I would change are the following. Get an R9 390 instead of an GTX 970. The 970 is a great card but it just doesn't make sense to buy one over a 390 anymore unless you are getting a killer deal on a very high end 3rd party 970. The 390 has much more VRAM, the 390 & 970 perform pretty much the same in games, & AMD's cards are seeing big jumps in performance with DX12 while Nvida's cards do not ATM. Also I would either change your CPU to a K SKUed 4790 or change the mobo to a H97 board. It don't make much sense to get a non-overclockable CPU with an overclocking mobo when you could find a H97 board that has all the same features for cheaper or get a K SKUed 4790 & have the ability to OC when needed.

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/QNGtVn Check this take on your list out. I switched out the 970 for a 390, switched the CPU to a i7 4790K, beefed up the PSU since AMD cards require a bit more power, changed the SSD to a 240GB one, & changed the HDD to a Toshiba 7200rpm 2TB. All this added only $6.38 to the total & would be a better buy IMO.

I'll change the graphics card, and since it's AMD I can change the monitor to a non g-sync monitor.

I'll change it to a 4790K and overclock it. I'll also change the HDD and SSD to something with a bit more storage.

I changed the GTX 970 for an R9 390 as well as changing the monitor and the CPU to a 4790k. I also increase the capacity of the SSD.

All good?

Changing the monitor should save you an extra bit also, I did not realize the monitor you had selected was a G-Sync one. Also make sure you go with at least a 750w PSU with an R9 390 as that is the minimum recommended wattage with those cards. The PSU you originally selected was a very good one but would've left you a little to close to the max wattage that rig can pull & left you no overhead for OCing. Speaking of OCing it is really up to you if you want to do it or not. I just figured you may as well go with a K SKUed CPU because of your mobo selection. Also even if you decide against OCing right now, it is always a welcome option to have further down the road when this system starts to fall behind the newer tech. Keep us updated when you get the parts & start building, also don't hesitate to ask for advice on building it if you find you need it. Hope to see this build in the Rig showcase here soon!
