I have an idea that may be of interest to the rest of the Linus Tech Tips Folding Community. I propose we start a kickstarter like funding mechanism to allow people to donate some cash towards building official Linus Tech Tips folding farms. Not everyone can afford a folding machine, and this way we can all contribute towards boosting the point production as a team. The computers could be built by Whaler or other admins and run under a new account called "official folding machine" that way there is no argument who gets the points for the machines calculations.

I think this idea would greatly increase our ranking as well as give everyone a chance to contribute towards folding without having to purchase their own machines. I hope this can spark some interest among the forums, wether it be this method or any other that could make for a more dominant folding team.

the thing is, I see folding as a hobby. Yes, it's helping science and possibly making changes, but at this point I'm thinking more about how I'm going to be 5th on the leaderboards in about 3 weeks.

the leaderboards made me feel competitive and even though it's all for science and a "greater cause", the money I put into folding is going to fold under my name.

and when you say "not everyone can afford a folding machine", what do you mean by that? there are people in this team that fold on pentium 4 and there are only a few of them who have dedicated folding machines. Is there anyone except Whaler and Mentalguy?most of us fold on our main and only pc. so this is targeted to people who can't even afford pc's or have laptops which turn into frying pans when you do anything on them.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't look very promising.

We wouldn't be doing something like this. People who cannot afford "gear" for folding and want to donate can, directly to Linus via the main page.

The main thing about Folding is a personal choice, to donate your gear/time to the cause. All the big teams, there individual guys have a lot of money and gear invested in it, have been doing it for years. We are, in the scale of things, very new. If we can keep the momentum going, in a year or two, we will see more members with big systems, or multiple as they upgrade and no longer toss gear, but keep it for folding.

Why do I have such gear? Yes, because I did dump a good amount of cash into it - but computers are my main hobby and this is one of my projects. :) All my extra money goes into computer junk. So, voila. I also have access to a lot of computer gear from my job, which gives me a leg up.

One of the main things I have really enjoyed seeing is the competition among members for the rankings. This is a lot of fun and putting in a generic monster folder would take away a bit from this I think. I keep saying - bring it on guys! I need someone to give me a run for the top! :D But right now, even the "small" guys are having fun, seeing themselves jump up the ranks.

BTW - I don't want to seem to down on you - it is a good idea, and ideas help move the team forward. Thanks for bring it up. Just doesn't fit with the team makeup right now, in my opinion.

One other thing to think of - if X amount did get raised, and Y beast system did get purchased, whoever got it, would need to deal with all the heat and the increased power bill. :)
