Upgrading CPU, do I need to buy more thermal paste?

So I am going to be upgrading my CPU soon and I have a beast CPU cooler in my PC that I want to continue using.

I am wondering if I need to buy thermal paste and wipe the existing thermal paste off the CPU cooler and re-apply via the CPU or do I have nothing to worry about and just replace the processor w/o applying new thermal paste?

Best practise is to always replace the thermal paste when you pull the components apart. The paste needs to form a strong "bond" between the two components in order to transfer heat most effectively. Your beast CPU cooler will be for nothing if the heat doesn't even reach it properly.

So, in short - yes, you'll have to buy some.

Change it, especially if you're mounting to a new CPU.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Thread moved to CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory.

Yes you should reapply the thermal paste on the CPU.

@Godlygamer23

My bad for wrong section

When I remove the cooler do I need to remove any remaining thermal paste from the CPU Cooler?

If you're playing around with a cheap $200 build where you don't mind being a bit ghetto, then sometimes you can skip applying new thermal paste.

Definitely recommended you apply fresh stuff for gear that you value in life.

It's worth putting on new thermal paste, it doesn't have to be anything expensive, MX-2 will do fine.

Yes.  You should have some thermal paste included with your cooler.  I know y CM V8 came with a small tiny tube I've used for 5 years.

@Samfisher

That will be useful for my next build.

However I didn't build my current PC myself

My dad had it made for my mom when I was a wee little boy

So I wouldn't know if they got thermal paste

Ah ok.  Well a tube of paste doesn't cost much and can last you years and years.

It's best to, but you dont necessarily have to reapply it every time. My first PC that I bought prebuilt back around 2009 never had new paste put on. I would take the cooler off every so often and clean the dust out(leaving the old paste there). I did that for several years probably removing the cooler ten times at least and I never had issues with temps. But its good to reapply it as a best practice. It cheap and easy to do.
