I use both Malware Bytes and Windows defender. Assuming your computer can handle it you can run them both at the same time no problem. ( I have never had a problem with it at least ). I would highly recommend you buy the malware bytes full copy but if you cant you can just get by on occasional scans.

What exactly where your parents doing to get the Ransomware?

In my experience running both of these programs works pretty well because bytes will catch things windows defender wont and vise versa.

Windows Defender isn't all that great. It's not awful, and it can do what it's supposed to, but there are better utilities.

Something like MalwareBytes is usually recommended. It's free, and does a pretty good job of taking care of the malware side of protecting your system. In tandem with Windows Defender, you should have a system that's pretty solid.

Use Avast, its completely free and has some of the best protection out there + set it on "gaming mode" and it will never bother you, no pop ops, completely free(you have to register once a year, and you can use the same email), and great protection.

Avast ftw.

I still don't know, they said the usual, but i suspect they tapped into some fishy download or something, but still, Defender's "Real time protection" should block the download plus Smart Screen.

Bitdefender free or avast or avira

Anti malware is hands down malwarebytes, though you should just use it for weekly scans and not for real time protection <<your AV should be dealing with that, BD free has a virus shield that is technically real time protection not sure about avast or avira

Don't call me a nerd, it makes me look slightly smarter than you

You should get Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit software. There is a free version and it will help fight against exploits in webbrowsers and similar. Not a 100 percent of course but can truly help if the webbrowser is not up to date or similar. Also, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, I run the paid version but the free one does the job well. Although you have to perform scans manually with the free one. For Anti-virus, you're going to have to try a few and find what you think is best for you. They all perform relatively similar but if you want, you can google how they perform in benchmarks. I myself would recommend Avira or Avast.

All of this should work together, I run MB Anti-Exploit (Free), MB Anti-malware (Paid), and Avira (Free).

Malwarebyte and superantispyware together with windows defender should be suffcient, however they can't protect against stupidity or carelessness. Antivirus is almost useless now a days since it's not as common anymore, so IMO it's not worth investing in a pro solution or comitting to any external AV, if you really want to though I suggest looking at AV-test.org to check out which one suits you. Ransomware like this is probably an e-mail attachment or a careless download button.

No, you do not have to disable defender with it :)

Avira is lowtech compared to Avast, especially subscription Avast.

+ Popops dude.... Avira has popops

Point is that you get better software, and no popops(avg is a bit childish).

+ just use a secondary email account, you dont even have to confirm it from your own email, just type in an email and you're good to go.

I wonder how they do manage get it in first place....  I think  probably your parents simply clicked on  adds and thats how they got ransomware..

To be fair last year ,, my laptop have been infected with ransomware virus.. And my avast av didn't do anything,, virus simply ignored my av. Even it where full/paid version.

After I reinstalled my OS, For fun I decided to check which av could stop this virus. even in that times most popular kaspersky internet security, neither avg pro, neither bit defender, neither malwarebites, neither g-data, neither Nod 32 internet security, neither other top 15 av, antimalware where able block it..

So moral of story where do not visit unknown websites.... :)

For pc user who do not downloading lots of programs/utilities and so one. Its enough to have simple av and have add's block installed in browser.   Plus with recommendation do not visit sh1t wbesites which provide cracks/hacks/serial codes and so called full program.. These tags are most common for websites which have viruses, keylogers and other type threats.

If u like to download lots of stuff, well u go with internet security + malwarebytes. and yet its not 100% protection. and high chance u can get infected...

The key of safety is avoid dangerous stuffs.

p.s lots of websites where so called top 10 av/antimalwares are supported by some companies so they usually promote av who paid most... :P

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.
