You could just go to the F@H website and it's explained right on the front page :P

You install a client on your computer that uses your computer as a node for distributed computing to help fold molecules and such to help science. If you have an op system and you mostly use it for browsing, it just uses excess system power and you can run it at night so even when you're not using it, you can contribute to science. You don't get anything from it but you can get a cool badge or two on the forum.

You know how it is, the cow goes "moo", the dog goes "woof" and the gamer goes "The PvP is unbalanced."

Spoiler

Personal Computer: CPU: i7-4790 Mobo: Asrock Z97 Extreme6 Graphics Card: MSI R9-380  Memory: 16GB (8GB x2) G. Skill Sniper Gaming Series PSU: Apevia Warlock 750W Case: NZXT Phantom 410 Series Storage: 240GB SSD (OS) 3TB HDD (data and such) 500 GB SSD (Movies and Large Data Transfers (I'm constantly moving this one around to other computers))

In sum, people researching diseases need processing power. A LOT of processing power. More than they could ever dream of paying for.

Enter Folding: you, regular person that understands nothing about biology, can help those researchers by donating what they need - computational power. Your PC at home is never using 100% of it's capabilities, so instead of wasting the hidden potential of your machine, you donate cycles to the ones that have a use and need for it.

Just install it and have your mind at ease, knowing that you are a supporter of science!

(Though I prefer Boinc over F@H, but that's a personal preference)

Do you do anything on these or are they just working in the background

Kinda have to go with Stanford over Cal (they're rival schools lol)

With both, you just have to (in theory) install the software, configure it once and then forget about it, it'll run in the background without the need for you to take further action.

In my case, I help Beta testing and other shenanigans, so I end up babysitting the software and always changing the configs to match whatever I'm currently working on.

But that's an exception, and the max you have to do is pause the thing before firing up a game (and that's if you don't configure it to do that automatically for you!
