FX-8350 worth the upgrade?

Hello!

I've been debating with myself for a REALLY long time on whether I should upgrade my current Phenom II 1100T to a FX-8350. I have all the necessary hardware to run it and do some light overclocking. I've looked at the benchmarks and they look solid, but there is a difference between benchmarks and actual use. I keep asking myself "Is it worth the upgrade?",  "Will I actually notice a performance difference?" or "Do I need an 8-core CPU?". This is where I need your input

Here are my specs (minus a few things):

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor  ($296.52 @ Amazon Canada)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($29.99 @ NCIX)
Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($109.99 @ Canada Computers)
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($64.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($77.98 @ NCIX)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card  ($289.99 @ NCIX)
Power Supply: XFX 750W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply  ($89.99 @ NCIX)

What I use my PC for (in order of most use to least):

1 - Gaming
2 - Basic Internet stuff
3 - Running Linux VMs and trying out new Windows

Other info that may help:

Cost of 1100T when purchased: $169.99

So do you have a 1055T or a 1100T right now?

Also, you can't compare the original launch retail price of the 1055T / 1100T to the FX-8350. The Phenoms II's are now not worth what they were 3-4 years ago.

I'd would say the first generation of FX processors (ie FX-8150) were certainly not worth the upgrade, but the 2nd generations (ie FX-8350) are.

I'm personally still rocking a 1090T @ 4.1GHz and I'm considering a FX-8350 myself.

8320 with a decent overclock should do the job. 4.4-4.6ghz should be easy with the 212 and will give you a good performance boost, but only in multithread games like crysis 3.

I've had the 1100T for just over a year and considering an upgrade.

Hmm I forgot not all games are multithreaded. Thanks for bringing that up.

No, don't get 8350/8320. It's more of a SIDEgrade than UPgrade since you lose some FPUs while gaining slower ALUs that can clock higher... imho, not worth it. Totally not worth it. In some uses you'd get some performance increase (only when using all the cores really) and in some uses you even have a chance of small loss of performance (!).

I've looked at these exact benchmarks many times (You posted the same link I've put in the OP) and you are right, especially when my main two uses of my comp. don't use all eight cores. The last reason however, using VMs, do benefit from the eight cores since I can allocate X number of cores to VMs A, B and C. My decision would be clearer if I didn't have those VMs.

Thanks for your input.

I think changing cpu to such inferior architecture as bulldozer is a waste of money if you already have phenom x6. Wait for something really BETTER to come out if you want to go with amd, or get intel but again I don't think upgrading to qaud core intel is such a good deal for the money spent. I say do not get anything for now. Maybe next year will bring some new CPUs to the table.
