Install CPU coolers with custom backplates without retention mounts

c0d3r3d

Hey all,

Got a bit of a problem. I'm midway through my "ghetto rigged experimental gaming server build"...thing...and the board just arrived today. I have two CM Hyper 103 coolers raring to go, but there's a problem. The CPU backplates need to be removed so I can install these coolers, but the retention mounts (the thing that holds the CPU in place, I think that's what you call it :p) are also screwed into the backplates, meaning I would need to take these off for the new backplates to fit in.

Question is, can I safely remove these and rely on the pressure of the heatsinks to keep the CPUs in place? If not, is there any type of screw in cooler that doesn't need a custom backplate that would fit on the 1366 socket? I'm probably really stupid for asking this question though, lol

Thanks,

Aidan.

Well, Linus has done that in some recent video. You just need to be extra careful when tightening things.
