The rasbbery pi is a 35 dollar computer with suprising hardwhere and now with the rasbbery pi 3 having build in wifi it is very competetiv with a lot of nas configurations.

neither.

raspberry pi limits you to usb2.0, which is a joke for a nas...

a prebuilt nas is usually overly expensive for what it is.

besides, building your own nas is a good learning expeience.

it gets crushed to bits by most things, but its pretty good preformance/$

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Why comic sans? That shits cancer dude...

Anyway, what are the components in the prebuilt pc?

You could always buy used parts on ebay/craigslist and just build one: It's more fun that way anyway :D

besides, the raspberry pi is 35 dollars, a power brick is 10 dollars, you need a usb hard drive, an SD card is another 20 bucks.

i'll pop back in with a rough example nas on pcpp to show how cheap you can get without even going second hand.

255 dollars, which sounds like a lot, but probably cheaper than a prebuilt nas when fitted with drives (note: $120 worth of drives in this) and most likely not much more expensive than a decent raspberry pi nas setup.

should add: imo the raspberry pi is an amazing toy for people who have outgrown hot wheels. its a cheap platform thats very easy to overclock, experiment with, and is pretty dang resilient to stupid shit.
