Im thinking of going full solid state from my mechanical hard drive. 4+ years and im still not used to that hum. so im thinking of an 850 EVO 250GB for main storage, like OS and other stuff, and an OCZ Trion 100 960GB for other storage. I know that most SSDs will be a definite upgrade from my mechanical drive, but i was worried about the amount of storage that i could get without killing my bank account. I knew i wanted a 960GB ssd, to make sure i am keeping a similar amount of storage to my mechanical drive, but i want to know if getting the EVO would be worth it as a faster drive. How much of a difference would i make? Are there any cheaper options at the same size and speed? Thanks in advance

Cons

  • Performance drops to hard drive levels during even modestly large data transfers

If you are already investing that much money into a huge SSD don't cheap out and get Samsung 850 evo or Crucial mx200. It's just not worth buying some unknown ssd for a little cheaper.

No, the Trion is the cheapest of the cheap, I would honestly go for a single better SSD as the Trion isn't particularly great (although it's not that it necessarily really matters since any SSD will be hard to tell apart from any other in daily use anyway).

Why not use the 960gb SSD for a boot drive as well? Why have a separate boot drive at that point?

Agreed. Get a 1TB EVO for both OS and storage.

wow you're all over my questions today. And i was just asking for advice on the speeds of the OCZ as i have heard its down the bottom with some of the slowest SSDs

or buy 4 250 gig 850 evos and raid the hell out of it.

RAID 0 on four drives is a terrible idea and is just asking for trouble.

but for realz. how much data can you have to put everything on ssd. if you have a hard drive which has a variable rpm you have a great amount of gigs for less money and when you don't use the harddrive it becomes almost silent.

Even at idle my HDD is the loudest part in my system and it annoys me.

I would personally go with a 500gb SSD and no HDD if I were to build a new computer right now as it would cost about the same as a 120gb ssd + 1tb HDD and since I have a NAS anyway I could live with only 500gb for games.

@Painey If you're in the US a Mushkin Reactor is only about $10 more than a Trion (and about $80 less than an 850 Evo).

Im trying for constant silence from my storage, and my machine in general. i am looking to get a strix 980 and the silent base 600 (dont know about cpu cooler yet), just to make my system just that bit more quiet, i cant stand to have a mostly silent machine that makes a fair bit of noise when i want to access a few files.

I would recommend the Samsung EVO's as that is what I'm using and have been happy. Maybe a 1TB and 250GB for OS.
They go on special quite often too.
