Network help plz!

I have a problem here guys. I'm trying to rank up in cs go but because my ping is almost always 500, I'm having some trouble. When i plug my Ethernet cord into the router, i have 500 ping most of the time and some of the time i have 30 ping. When i plug my ethernet cord into the WAN port on the modem, i have 20 ping. I recently upgraded both my modem and my router. Does anyone here have any suggestions or does anyone know whats going on here?

I assume that you have a seperate router and modem? Maybe you could try to explain it a bit more clearly or take a picture.
