so i have two GPUs. one is a GTX 760 phantom and the other is a msi GTX 970. and i was wondering can you SLI the two gpus.

video to my rig setup for more info:

i really want to do something with this GPU then it just sit on my bookshelf . also it the 760 that i have sitting around

YOU COULD try and SLI them, do Nvidia haven't been updating there old drivers as much as they used to, but YOU SHOULDN'T because not a lot of games are compatible with SLI. Also, your gtx 760 willl bottleneck the shit out of your GTX970.

You could try and sell both and upgrade to a 980 or an R9 390 if you really want better performance because like Flowey said, that 760 will bottle neck your 970 and a lot of games don't really work too well with SLI.

You know how it is, the cow goes "moo", the dog goes "woof" and the gamer goes "The PvP is unbalanced."

Spoiler

Personal Computer: CPU: i7-4790 Mobo: Asrock Z97 Extreme6 Graphics Card: MSI R9-380  Memory: 16GB (8GB x2) G. Skill Sniper Gaming Series PSU: Apevia Warlock 750W Case: NZXT Phantom 410 Series Storage: 240GB SSD (OS) 3TB HDD (data and such) 500 GB SSD (Movies and Large Data Transfers (I'm constantly moving this one around to other computers))

By the way is a r9 390 considered equal to a gtx 980? Lately that's what I've been hearing, haven't got the time to research myself since I'm supposed to be working right now.

I've heard that an r9 390 out performs a 980 in some areas but I can't research either.( maybe it was that it outperforms a 970)

i thought SLIing would  mix the CUDA cores or what not

no the stronger card would be bottlenecked by the weaker, I also don't think you can SLI two cards that aren't the same model

You can only SLI two Nvidia cards for DX12, which there is minimal if any support right now.

So, the short answer for now is... you cannot SLI the two cards, afaiik.

FX-8350 | GA-990FXA-UD3 | G.SKILL 2x8GB 1600MHz | 1TB WD RE4 | CM Hyper 212 EVO | MSI R9 290x Lightning | Corsair AX860i | Silverstone FT05B-W

Pentium G3258 | MSI Z97 PC Mate | G.SKILL 4x4GB 1066MHz | 500GB Samsung 2.5" | Stock cooler | Pending GPU | EVGA 500B | Antec DF-35

GoPro Hero 3 Silver | Netgear R7000 Nighthawk with DD-WRT | HP Officejet Pro 8610 | Canon iP110 | AudioTechnica ATR2500 USB

Downdraft cooler for mITX board (new build) | Desk mount mic stand | Pop filter | Anti-vibration mount for microphone | mITX case | 3rd monitor (matching existing 23.1" | Intel Core i7-4790K (for mITX build)

a 390 would be a closer match to the 970

also, nvidia doesnt allow SLI between different GPU, so i think thats a no

but DX12 will utilise multi gpu (not SLI or crossfire), but only if the games use it

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

You cannot SLI two different GPUs.

I think I know that, in this specific case, he can't SLI. But I believe if he had something like a 950 he would be able to SLI, right? SLI is limited to same card line up, right? (as in gtx950,960,970,980,etc)

No. SLI is limited to the same GPUs only. Aka: 970 with 970, 980 with 980 and so on.

Really? What the hell, sucks for team green, sure hopes they get some proper support for that kind of stuff with DX12/Vulcan

That's the way way it's always been, for both teams.

Wait a minute, ain't Crossfire quite more versatile then SLI? Never tried it myself, so I'm speaking from info I've heard, not researched.

With xfire you can do 280(X) with 280 or 380(X) and 290(X) with 290 or 390(X) Except the best card gets 'downgraded' (in terms of VRAM) to the worst card. So a 380 with a 380X would have the 380X downgrade itself to a 380.
