To cancle the noise, the noise itself has to correlated with itself. You can easely supress a sine wave, but it's nearly impossible to do something against white noise with an active noise canceling system.
 

As a lot of the fan noise is due to air turbulence (that produces white noise) it's really hard to make a good noise canceling system. Not sure if it ever make it to mass production.
