ISP's and TOR

So from my understanding TOR is a network of switches or servers that you connect to making it harder to trace back after each server. So what does this look from the ISPs perspective. Do they just see you connecting to a random IP address and that's it?

They basically see you going onto the TOR network but nothing past that, keep in mind TOR servers are run anonymously therefore some random dude can be farming any data that crosses his path. Rumour has it you are automatically flagged by the ISP for using TOR but that is not confirmed

Well I was just curious on how it all worked. Seems dumb though as using TOR doesn't mean you are doing illegal things, just very suspicious

Yeah, TOR is legal but the government doesn't like the fact that they can't watch what everyone's doing and that is where the debate begins

Kind of. It's not really as simple as an ISP seeing an IP that is a part of the TOR network, as it uses various nodes, rather than dedicated servers. I guess the initial download of the node list is the most "dangerous" part of using it. 

Even if the FBI does have nodes set up, the chances of your data going through those nodes is pretty small, and even then, the origin is hard to trace by design, so unless the data actually contains information that links back to you, there's not a whole lot they can do with it.

Everyone Has it all wrong.

 

First you connect to tor official then they put vpn on you

after they send to random server some random dude in the world has and you get double vpn and so on...

From what I understand, it operates in a similar way to how Bitcoin keeps transactions anonymous. It shuffles the data through multiple random nodes before it reaches its destination. 

People say that the government has taps on the TOR network, but it's not confirmed and fairly likely to be a scare tactic to discourage people from using it. 

If you're just looking for general privacy online, then a VPN is enough for most users. With a good one you don't even notice it's on most of the time (expect for Google search results, which all show up .de sites for me as I use a VPN set to Germany)

It can be traced, the german people from Chaos Computer Club show a way to do it. And alsothe ISP at the end of the connection is able to see the traffic. The encryption and system is strong but not unbeateable!!! You can use it, but use also VPN, several different VPNs and never give your real name to any website or even your own computer.
