Occasional hiccup on ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1

wyattzx

Hey guys.

I posted a very similar thread a month or so back, but I've collected a few more details now that I wish to share.

During boot, my PC will occasionally (once a week or so) hang on the ASUS POST splash. my keyboard will light up, and then stay on. It will hang there for about a minute, before proceeding into Windows. However, upon entering Windows, my USB devices will not be immediately initialized. All of my USB devices will be powered off for about 10 seconds, before all of them simultaneously turning back on. This prompts my eHDD to open up as if it was connected. I've also occasionally received an error message regarding corrupt USB controllers, but when I check device manager, everything is fine.

Additionally, once a week or two, while powering down my PC, it will refuse to shut off. I waited five minutes, and it never powered down. The monitor goes into standby, but everything stays on. Manually shutting it down works (holding the power button) but upon next boot, the PC will power up, click off, and power itself back on, before kicking me to a "Overclocking failed!" screen. This will occur until I either cycle my power supply, or move my USB devices around. Then the first boot will go through POST fine, but then the USB device initialization will be delayed. Subsequent shutdowns and power-ons will be fine for a week or two, before the cycle begins again.

I've tried avoiding using certain USB ports, ignoring my 3.1 ports altogether, and moving devices around. It still occurs rather routinely, and I'm not sure what to do, or even what the problem is.

Help?

I have a similar issue with my Maximus VII hero refusing to get past the splash screen, it displays error code 64, try unplugging your keyboard when it's on the splash screen, since that's what fixes my issue. o.O

Yeah, my board will throw up an error code "9C" which means it's hanging at the USB initialization. Un-plugging my keyboard did help, but so too did un-plugging other things. Maybe it's just a quirky issue with ASUS boards?

I have a similar issue if I leave my mobile connected on my x99 sabertooth.
Occasionally kicks me over to the American MegaTrends screen instead of booting.
Exactly the same issue when shutting down with the phone plugged in too.

Nfi why - unplugging said phone seems to fix it.

"The wheel?" "No thanks, I'll walk, its more natural" - thus was the beginning of the doom of the Human race.
Cheese monger.

This has become both more puzzling, and less puzzling. I'm not the only one, yet none of us know what's wrong. Yet, at the same time, we all have minor fixes for it.

I'm so confused.

Hey you still got these Problems? I´ve got these Problems to with my X99 Deluxe and i Searched for 6months and the Problem is that Windows can´t do a Handshake with the USB ports from ASUS.

Go to the BIOS and set USB Boot completly off... or partitaly off set it complete off you will get a issue when you have to go to your BIOS you have to press CMOS reset and set it again.

It also will help to set fast boot.

I was reading about that, and turning off USB initialization does help. However, I'd rather deal with this quirk every few weeks, versus having to reset my BIOS every time I wish to make a change. Thanks though!
