Im thinking about making a server here, not on all the time, but on enough for when friend want to play that i have no care about turning it on.

I have looked though the games, and here is what I found to be server requirements for each.

Space is not an issue, i have plenty of harddrives laying around along with a few SSD.

Terraria - Large worls uses about 2GB RAM, 200MB-500MB of space and cpu speed of 1.6GHz (hosting 1-15 players)

Minecraft - 1 Core 2.6GHZ, 2GB RAM, 15GB HDD space (1-15 players)

Ark - 2 core 2.4GHZ (could be different) 6GB Ram (and then more with clients) and about 30GB of HDD space (1-30 players)

I wouldnt mind something cheap, like a 2 core 4 thread, or even a 4 core cpu. but low power would be best.

Was thinking about this for low power

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157494&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-VigLink-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=6160237&SID=ilhn3k5iej0115i000053

for the motherboard and CPU, but it only support 8GB of ram, but the good thing is, it is a quad core and runs around 10 Watt

Thinking something along the lines of a 10-25Watt (i can put some leway in the wattage) 2 core, 4 thread (or 4 core) up to 16 (or 32) GB of RAM, and i have a few harddrives that arelarger than 250GB so i can make a different drive a different game server. reason why a little more powerful cpu, is that it can run things without a problem. I have Gigabit ethernet, so bottlenecks in the broadband isnt at all a problem for me.

You are going to want to be looking at beefier quad-core processors. Something like a locked i5 or Xeon processor for running all those at the same time.

If you want to just run one at a time, I'd still recommend at least an i3. Atom/Celeron line is going to be a bit weak. (okay, okay, alot weak).

from my experience terraria server seems to run pretty much everywhere, i dont have much experience with ark, but for minecraft i have my fair share of experience.

basicly, minecraft servers use roughly 1 and a half core. depending on what you'll be doing on the server, and how many mods (if any) you'll be running you'll be looking at something between an athlon x2 and skylake processor.

as for energy usage-wise, you shouldnt be *that* worried: my sual-server setup uses roughly 80 watts from the wall with the following hardware:

- i3 560

- 4GB ram

- 3x spinning rust storage

- i7 4770

- 10GB ram

- 1x spinning rust storage

- GT640

to give that a comparison, thats in the same ballpark as the downstairs tv setup when powered off. or still mindblowingly less than even a high efficiency fridge.

yeah but at 24/7 it will ad up over time. 80 watts doesnt seem like much, but if i was running solar, then i wouldnt mind. im trying to get something under 50watts if possible. and you really dont need much of a beefy CPU. terraria and minecraft will run fine like that, but i dont want to shell out hundreds of $$ on a dedicated server for just 3 games to play with my friends. Now if i was hosting for world use, and got donations towards it, then that would be different.

Terraria you're right, doesn't require much. Minecraft vanilla also doesn't require much. Minecraft with addons can quickly become demanding. I had a server that had ~70 various plugins and about 50 users on at once and it wasn't entirely happy with 18gb dedicated to it (whole system only had 24gb).

I think what you've listed might struggle with ark but if you can handle spurts of lag go for it.

Only thing I see is it meets today's needs but you might find yourself quickly outgrowing it.

even with belgian stupidly high power cost 80 watts comes down to €12 per month, which is pretty dang low for the computing power it grants me. (remember, theres a GPU in there)

also, between a single xeon machine, and a single low power celeron we're talking about like €3 difference in the monthly bill.

should add, if you dont need the xeon's computing power it'll happily throttle down and use less power, while still having that power at hand for (for example) loading up your servers, or when 5 people are cruising around the minecraft server loading new chunks.

very true. Im in the US, and i have no idea what the power bill is here since i go to highschool and live with my parents for now.
