basicly i want to set up a simple storage solution that everyone in the house can easily throw data on from several seperate computers without physicly having to connect to anything. I want a solution as simple as possible have as low power consumption as possible, and be as cheap as possible :P, and possibly being able to set up passwords for each directory?

it's probably only going to consist of something along the lines of 1 or two 2-3 TB drives  ( or possibly 2 drives in raid 1?)

got any advice or cool ideas for me? something that isn't overly complicated as i want it to be as basic as possible, but hopefully still fairly practical.

You could look at using FileZilla FTP in combination with windows explorer (folders, not browser) then have a NAS.

As for hardware, basic i3 Haswell CPU for low power draw, Silverstone SFX PSU (compact, good quality, relatively cheap & quiet) 4 or 8GB of RAM.

Now for drives, how much storage do you need?

Otherwise you could go with a WD, Patriot or Seagate solution.

or he could just share the computer he sets up's "C" drive and create a virtual drive on each pc which looks like an extra hard drive basically.

Or he could do that but then a) that'd be no fun and b)He'd have to leave his PC on more often.

wake on LAN? I find it easier for a home use environment because not everyone in his house is tech savvy so he'd have to teach each one how to use filezilla.

You can setup FileZilla just as a folder in explorer. No need to teach anyone anything.

but then it serves the same purpose as having the hard drive show as a virtual/network drive, idk. I wouldn't waste the time setting up filezilla imho.

basically share the hard drive (give read/write permission as well), go to the shared hard drive on each computer and:

1. right click

2. select map Network drive

3. follow on screen instructions.

BTW: I like your profile pic.

hmm.... well that does fit my criteria i guess, and i would feel dirty for buying a pre done solution like a NAS, actually pretty clever, the only downside is while not being THE most practical (but still pretty practical) i also intend to backup a few files of my own, so i would prefer having an external solution keeping the data as safe as possible away from my rig. While by far being the most fun, having a dedicated system like Windspeed suggested would easily get pretty expensive.
