If so, change it back and try again.

 

Usually a brute but foolproof trick works: A clean install instead of an upgrade. 

Get the USB installer instead of the in-OS installer. You can get the USB creation tool here. Boot the machine off of the USB and do a clean install. You can use the license key for 7 or 8 or 8.1 during the installation. This method will completely eradicate all the data on your installation partition so do backups beforehand.
