Sennheiser HD 558 + Samson Meteor, anything else I need?

Shadic_

I'm upgrading my headphones, and I'm just checking if there's anything else I should be aware of before I make a purchase. I do mostly gaming, but a decent amount of music as well. I already have a Samson Meteor Mic, so I don't need one of those. I was planning on getting some HD 558s, but was looking in to the 518s because I heard they had better bass. What do you guys think, and is there anything else I should know?

I was also looking at the AD500Xs from Audio Techica, would those work better? I'd like to stay 100$ or less if possible.

if you are gaming and use coms like teamspeak or ventrilo buy the HD558s and a dac+amp like the creative soundblaster e1

You see, I don't have that much money. As I mentioned.

Don't listen to this guy.  None of the headphones mentioned need any kind of amp to drive them.  All of those cans are alright for sub-$100.  Check out the audio forums recommendations thread, maybe you'll find some more options sub-$100 that you'd like.

Yeah, but I don't really need the mic from them, so why spend the extra cash on that when I could get better headphones?

Owning a headset and being able to compare them to another are two different things. I own a pair of HD558, but couldn't compare them to the HyperX, 'cause I never heard them. Regarding the HD558: since they are open headphones, there isn't an earth shattering amounts of bass - especially when compared to closed back. That does not mean that they lack bass -  if there is (even rather deep) bass in the music / game, they will reproduce it correctly, but it is not overwhelming.

Another benefit of the open design, besides the often mentioned "wider sound stage" is the fact that you can hear yourself talk when using a mic. I recently got myself closed-back BEyerdynamics Custom One Pro's and even though they sound very nice I find it rather distracting using them with teamspeak and only hearing myself muffled.

Get the 558s and if they're not loud enough, then you need an amp. You probably won't though.
