I want to create a new computer but i will be reusing the hard drive with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit OS, and the CPU which is an i5 2400. if i reuse the hard drive and cpu, but i get everything else new like the motherboard and gpu, what problems should i expect while launching the PC? Will the PC not be able to launch due to the motherboard or will it just work like normal? also, i will have to download the new components drivers right and uninstall the old ones?? i asked my friend at school, and he said it should just run fine even with the new components. thanks!

i checked out "Tom's Hardware" and there was a response to my post but it was totally contradicting each other so I'm just clueless. Thanks!

Officially, you would need a new windows license if you change mobos. Also if you don't reinstall windows it can cause driver issues (HDD assigned to a diffrent port, etc). Is there any reason for upgrading the mobo, all mobos esentially perform the same (you pay for more ports, better capacitors, and various features) and you can reuse windows that way

i'm getting a new motherboard because i'm just an OEM motherboard on my HP Elite 8200 motherboard (Hewlett-Packard  1495) and i can't move it out of its case because the I/O is literally on the case. Also, so if i got my PC preinstalled with windows, that means i have no product key right? if i'm going to get a new copy of windows, is it worth just starting out fresh with a new hard drive also? i currently have an WD Blue 250 GB.

Put all your parts into PC part picker and it will tell you if the parts work together or not, it will also tell you why it won't work if there are any incompatible parts.

I did that and there were no issuess/compatibility issues.

You do have a product key, but it is only registered to be used on that specific mobo. You can reformat and reuse your HDD with a fresh install. The I/O shouldn't be permenetnly attached to the case. Thats just the I/O shield, which you can pop off and use in a new case. The only thing to look out for is if it is a standard size and the PCIe slot supplies the full 75W.

PCpartpicker only displays hardware issues. you would be able to post but that doesnt mean that windows will necessaraly load (if you reuse the old install)

If you're staying within the same generation of CPU/MOBO you should be able to transfer over to a new board with relatively few issues. Any MOBO will file through the boot device list until it hits MBR, what port you had it previously plugged into is meaningless.

The only thing you may have to do is reactivate your Windows license over the phone with their automatic service. Takes around 5 minutes. Every HP/Dell/OEM board I've had my hands on from that gen has had an Intel NIC, even those drivers will probably port over no problem assuming it's a PROSet gen NIC on the new board.

So what you have told me so far, is it worth continueing with reusing the parts of my PC or start out fresh with everything new besides the processor?

You can try to reuse the mobo, OS and processor, and save about $200 on new parts unless you need the functionality of a better board. I cant guarentee it will work, but its worth a try.

This doesn't matter. As runit3 said, you just have to call the activation number and it will activate it on the new system. Even with a new mobo, hard drive, whatever. The only issue would be if he tried to activate it on multiple machines at the same time.
