Time bomb was made after the Publisher and Developer had a dispute and then the publisher was bought by another company. This is absurd that a $30 game on steam is not playable.

There was a person who made a patch to get around the time bomb but they were banned from the official Oovee forums. Here is a topic on the issue on the official forums but they're trying to say that it was unintentional bug even though it was predicted weeks ago.

Also check out the spintires subreddit, there is more info over there.

Some Extra info:

  • pavel wants more money or better contract or god knows what he wants
  • oovee says no, apparently only communicates through lawyers
  • pavel adds "timebombs": code segments that make the game crash or stuff not work with set timers/dates, to fuck with oovee
  • oovee apparently doesn't know shit about coding and probably doesn't have the uncompiled code
  • forum user "hacks" the game, finds the timebombs, also posts a fix immediately, makes everyone aware of the situation

IF TRUE he's literally killing a fairly good contract dispute case if his claims vs the publishers are not bullshit. But it looks like they are. Steam needs to step in, role back the game to a previous patch without the code and remove the game from the store.

They'd be doing the publisher a favor because otherwise they'd had to honor all refund requests. Though I kinda want to see that happen so the devs are thrown in fucking jail, or at least be made to be broke until they personally repay all lost profits.

I dunno if this is worse than the shit Overkill pulled with Payday 2.

I'm gonna say it is.

what? the fact that there is now micro/macro(don't have the game, don't know how much they cost)-transactions?

I'd say this is worse, the lead dev actively breaking the game (in an attempt) to screw with the publishers. but by extension everybody's copy of the game so triggering an event most likely key to level progression (unlocking a garage, delivering a set of logs, etc). will crash the game, making it unplayable for everybody who bought it long before this developer-publisher conflict began.

PayDay 2 Micro transactions, aren't a big deal. The developer lied, so many other do. It's not acceptable.

This seems to be the fix can confirm game crashes when you try and play.

Having just read through the Oovee forum thread:

Oovee are keeping their mouths shut on the issue, except for terse confirmations that the problem exists and is being worked on. The developer is essentially uncontactable, but that's normal. The forum mods are being run ragged, keeping up with the usual sort of response of web forum denizens to a widespread problem.

The timebombs themselves are numerous, but fairly simple and mostly similar to each other; they don't cause permanent damage, but just glitch and crash the game. They use about three different triggers (two of which are different methods of determining the system date), and are designed to go off in sequence over time, obviously in the hope that only one at a time will be found and patched out. Fortunately someone dug deeper and looked for patterns - and found several dozen of them.

This person, who made a patch-workaround (actually a series of them, each finding and fixing more timebombs) doesn't seem to be banned, rather respected. Apparently he's even giving Oovee technical advice in the interest of getting a proper fix out to everyone ASAP. His latest patch focuses on removing the payloads of the timebombs, which are very similar to each other, rather than their triggers which are more diverse.

There is a second workaround which doesn't rely on binary patching, but instead avoids triggering the timebombs. This requires disabling certain mods (since some of the triggers are checks of file integrity) and wrapping the game in a utility which fakes the system date.

There's no question that the timebombs were deliberately placed, probably as a negotiation tactic. I won't speculate further on the precise circumstances.
