So whats the best "little knowned" mechanical keyboards manufacturer you know off? Would you recommend them?

Hm, I would go with "WASD Keyboards" but there are probably even smaller ones out there I just don't know. Would I recommend them? Definitely.

Yeah, it's more a "once in a lifetime" thing if you're outside of the US. If you know what you want and order a keyboard for ~150 that will last you for ten years shipping is no big thing, but small things are out of the question. Honestly, get to the closest store that has a lot of keyboards and check which key you like the most and ten build one. :)

I would have to say Unicomp.

Although there for a while, I want to say that Dell made a mechanical QuietKey in the late 90s similar to my membrane one that used Alps switches. I forgot the model number, but I still really want to get one for the lulz.

Unicomp for a good decade keyboard.  Topre / Realforce for the best.  Most don't know of them, though more have lately.  Also good is Varmilo.  My favorite is Magic-force, and I still need a Team Wolf keyboard for hot-swappable switches.  Matias isn't all that well known worldwide, but they're the best source to get ALPS switches now.  Or well.. simplified switches.  Complicated were the best.

My vote, as far as buckling spring boards go would actually be http://www.modelfkeyboards.com/ As they are going to be producing Actual Model F boards, which are superior to model m boards by a wide margin.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of topre. I do definitely love me some alps though... If I were able to get my hands on some blue or green alps for a reasonable price, I'd probably go for it, but I can't really justify spending any more on boards than I already have over the past month, so I don't think I'll end up getting there. I do already have some Matias switches though, so I think I'll be alright.

Also, I'm seriously looking forward to my build that's going to have the Aristotle switches in it. That should look awesome.

Wow, their used Model M's are also more overpriced than clickykeyboards.com.

I haven't really looked into Models F's too much but they do sound better, the layout is Pre-Model M standard keyboard layout era and that scares me off wanting to buy one to use it (The cost doesn't help as well).

Well that's why my vote wasn't for the model M, but rather the Model F. Also, what do you mean about it not being a standard layout? For the most part, those are all pretty standard layouts.

The Model F's might have a similar layout between all of them but they are not like anything since the Model M since the Model M's layout is the standard modern keyboard layout (Minus Windows and Menu button)

If I want to press ESC on any modern keyboard, I know which key to press, the same with Delete, Alt, Ctrl and all the other keys. I might be able to learn and also remember what I have mapped keys too (like Delete so I can log on), but what happens if someone else wants to use my computer? They have to go and work out which is the ESC key and which key I have mapped to be "Delete" so I can log on.

Nixeus, $60 for mechanical keyboards, best bang4buck i have seen in a long while.

Pro's for $60 :

- Plug-and-play functionality

- No drivers or software to install

- Accommodates Mac and legacy PC users

- High quality stabilizers under longer keys

- Three-year warranty

Verdict

While taking simple to a new level with the tenkeyless and (almost) LED-less Moda v2, Nixeus created an elegant but austere keyboard that should attract gamers looking for something inexpensive. It also caters to Apple users and PC gamers with legacy hardware. There are a few minor design and build quality issues, but for the price, it's probably worth the gamble— especially with the three-year warranty in hand.

All of the Model Fs on the Modelfkeyboards.com site have a standard layout... Other than a 1 row shift for the right section of the extended 60% board. I've never seen a Model F that didn't have a standard layout. Could you show me one please?

The first two are pretty much standard, aside from the placement of the F keys. The placement for CTRL is actually a pretty common thing for people to do. I can't really comment on the bottom row, since that was long before Windows was even a thing. The third one, I've never seen used as an actual keyboard, so there's that...

As for the fourth one, now you're getting into some really old territory.

So, you're correct, but I'd also like to point out that for most people (and yes, most people still hunt for symbols/anything that's not one of the alphas...) they're still going to be looking for the keys, so as long as they are properly labeled, it won't really be that much of an issue...(also the first two look like the inspiration for the KMAC Mini, which is pretty dang cool if you ask me.
