Hard drive or SSD

I recently got a 2TB portable hard drive (western digital) and yesterday I accidentally dropped it and it doesn't work anymore so i'm trying to decide what I should buy now, I have a 2.5" enclosure for both a hard drive and ssd (usb 3.0) but what would be a better overall option a 500GB hard drive or a 256GB SSD?? either would be fine but what would be the best option for now?
