Nope, it doesn't have the same RAM issue. It can use all 4GB without having the same issues the 970 does.

Is it still a good choice?

I have a 970 card and I never have any issues with my RAM.

My Rig: 2x Xeon x5690 @ 3.45Ghz 24GB DDR3 EEC RAM Asus STRIX GeForce GTX 970 SuperMicro X8DT3 Windows Server 2008 R2

Here's a little TL;DR of what you need to know about the GTX 970 and R9 390

R9 390 works better in VRAM-bound scenarios and compute bound scenarios and is best paired with higher end processors

GTX 970 works better in CPU-bound scenarios and tessellation bound scenarios and is best paired with lower end processors

That's not 100% true. You CAN use all 4GB just the last 512MB run at about 1/2 to 1/3 the speed. Not a problem when your using the card in a workstation :P

You plan on gaming in 1080p or 4K?

1080p the 970 should be great for you. if your aiming for anything higher than 1080 aim for a 980 or 980i

The 980 does not have the vram issue like the 970 has.  The reason the 970 has 512mb of slower ram is because the card is slightly watered down 980.

I might get a 970 then upgrade to 980ti when neccisary

Price to performance: R9 390X is better. But GTX 980 is still a good choice if you want to stick with the green team.

I do full VR with Oculus Rift and run games at full 1080p and I get great performance from my GTX970. I can't say enough about how well the card treats me. Unless your playing Witcher 3 on ultra settings @ 4k you should be OK with a 970 card

It's 1/7th of the speed compared to the rest of the 970's memory, 1/8th compared to the 980's memory bandwidth. It's a seperate, 32bit wide channel. The rest runs on 224bit. 980 has it's memory run full on 256bit

And yes OP, it's a great card. If you can score it secondhand.

Ah. My bad. Still, I wouldn't rule out a GTX 970 for that single reason. It's still an good card that handles 1080p extremely well
