i7 or Xeon

ZeusXI

I know the I7-4790k is great for gaming running 4 cores, 8 threads at 4.0GHz

Im wondering, Whats the real difference between an I7-4790k, and a Xeon 1231v3 running at 3.4GHz?

Im looking for specifics and stuff, not just websites because ive been looking around.

3.4GHZ vs 4.0GHz

No iGPU on the Xeon

Thats it

Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Turbo 3.5GHz | 8GB Kingston DDR3-1333 | MSI Radeon R7 370 OC to 1020mhz | EVGA Supernova NEX B1 750W | GIGABYTE GA-B85-D3H | Inwin Velocity OEM Case | 120mm broken fan

Pick a game, look up CPU benchmarks and just compare. Here are a few (for the battlefront/Tomb Raider comparisons the numbers aren't what they would be for Haswell, but the performance deltas will be similar):

What about for Star Citizen? i play that along with a few other games similar. they claim to use multiple cores at once. I know the graphics card also plays a role in it

Basically just the core clock difference... then again the 4790k is unlocked so you can further spread the performance gap. I'd say for most people the 1231v3 would be perfectly fine and you'll be more limited by the GPU that you have. If you plan on going with a GPU thats probably in the $400 range or more then I'd go with the 4790k.

You should get away with it just fine, but unless you're getting a stellar deal with the Xeon, it normally isn't worth the hassle. Take it from me, I pretty much wrote the guide on it.

I don't know about Star Citizen, but Arma 3 is known for being an IPC whore....so if I had to take a complete shot in the dark I would expect it to be somewhat similar.

A Xeon would be like $100 cheaper.

is there anything that compares the I7-4790k and Xeon 1231v3 together for games? most of these graphs are the same CPU in 1 game overclocking, and underclocking them

The only difference between a Xeon E3 1231v3 and a 4790k is clock speed (and integrated graphics, which is irrelevant here). So just compare the performance deltas between 3.5ghz, 4ghz, and 4.5ghz.

So it wont really make a difference. Alright. Only real difference is in the Ram bandwidth, and also the speed of the RAM. But 1600 RAM with a low CL will work fine. I read and had help with ram that it really doesnt make a difference in FPS

Yeah, for 99.99% of games clock speeds won't make that much of a difference, but in some (like Arma 3) it will -- but 3.5ghz vs. 4/4.5ghz won't be the difference between playable and not. Or in much older single threaded games (like CSGO) overclocking can increase FPS a decent amount -- but even at 3ghz you'd be in the 300FPS range with a capable GPU.

So yeah, clock speed is largely irrelevant for gaming.

But if i get the 980 like some people have been saying, would i7-4790k be any better? or will that run just about the same as well cause that extra money saved can go for a better gpu

It will basically run the same in 99% of games. In Arma 3 a 4790k would be beneficial, and in Star Citizen (if it's an IPC whore like Arma 3) it might be as well (I'd actually make a post in the Star Citizen section and/or make a post that has Star Citizen in the title to get an answer from someone who actually plays it.

But my inclination is that a 4790k might get you a slightly higher FPS (in Star Citizen), but it won't be the difference between playable and not. So going the Xeon route you'd save $150~ that you could put towards a better GPU, which would be a better investment.

It's worth mentioning that if you plan on getting an SLI capable motherboard, then the cost difference between a 4790k and Xeon would be more like $80~. If I were building a system right now I would personally be going for a Xeon paired with an R9 390 and just pocketing that $150~.

Well depending on your situation (if you can drive) and how much you care/how far away it is, then you can get a 4790k+Z97s Krait for $400 after tax.
