Considering buying a secondhand Shield

Most of the videos or posts I have read talk about having to return the old one and once the new one is activated the old one is disabled

If the seller has paperwork you should ask to see it and then I recommend inspecting the tablet when you meet up as per the instructions on the recall site: http://tabletrecall.expertproductinquiry.com/

In the settings you can see the battery type and also the serial number and compare to what is on the paperwork.

The original tablet is supposed to be deactivated when the new one is turned on, but a simple root and package removal can block the remote deactivation. This process also blocks GRID and any OTA updates from getting to the tablet. If you reinstall the package, the device will likely be bricked. So make sure that it is NOT the original unit unless you know that and don't care. Though I do not recommend you use a device that could potentially catch fire.

EDIT: if the shield has MM on it then it is likely the new unit.

Thinking about getting my hands on a second hand Nvidia Shield and the one I am looking at right now is "new" seemingly. Seller says that it was one of the recalled units and they sent him a new one, the new units seem to have good reports online but I was wondering, how to I check if it is a unit that is post recall? any advice?

I read this as a second shield for your hand until I read the topic. Secondhand is one word.

Tip to those that are new on LTT forum- quote a post so that the person you are quoting gets a notification, otherwise they'll have no idea that you did. You can also use a tag such as @Ryoutarou97 (replace my username with anyone's. You should get a dropdown after you type the "@")to send a notification, but quoting is preferable.

Feel free to PM me about absolutely anything be it tech, math, literature, etc. I'll try my best to help. I'm currently looking for a cheap used build for around $25 to set up as a home server if anyone is selling.

If you are a native speaker please use proper English if you can. Punctuation, capitalization, and spelling are as important to making your message readable as proper night theme formatting is.

My build is fully operational, but won't be posted until after I get a GPU in it and the case arted up.

if he has the paperwork for a recall, i doubt he'll have been allowed to keep the old one. he could have had multiple units, but if he'd gone to the trouble of sending one back i dont see why he wouldnt have sent all he had.

They get to keep it. They have flooded my classifieds.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

So a big thanks to @Warcony for the advice on how to see what is what. I had already asked on the Nvidia Forum but had not gotten a reply yet

So I have it now, its the correct version

Quote

Under the “Battery” category, you’ll see Y01 or B01
If B01, your unit is NOT affected by this recall
If Y01, your unit needs to be replaced

Mine has the B01 battery. Plus I have a1 year warranty which the guy helped me set up. Really nice and genuine guy, all good. Proud owner of a Shield Tablet at a 40% discount :D

Tablet has updated, registered and all is well

PS: For those that come after me and want to do this also, the Serial number and the model number are not a good indication, its the battery number.

A couple of pointers for you to get the best battery life:-

Turn wifi mode to "never" when sleeps.

Go into optimisation and put all low power apps on customised settings:-

For mine I have Apps and games that need the power on 4 cores and 80-90% max... anything else is put on 2 cores and 50-80% max. I think that the shield has a bug where if the cores get to 100% it bugs out big time.. that has been my experience anyway, the battery life is terrible unless you do a few tweaks as above.

When you're going to be wanting a lot of battery use out of it or putting it into deep sleep, you're going to want to put it into battery saver mode and possibly use something like ES task killer to kill off the apps that could still be draining power.

I have done all the above and can now take my tablet off charge in the morning, put it into battery saver mode and use for 10 mins, run ES task killer stuff then put it into sleep mode... then even if I leave it all day until maybe 10pm I still have around 95-98% battery depending on how much I used it in the morning and what I used it for. Anyway, so after being in deep sleep I can usually use my tablet for games/video/web browsing etc for approx 6-8 hours straight and still have around 20-50% battery left (depending on useage of course), hope it helps :)
