Computer logs into black screen

Every time I log into windows 10, I get a black screen with my curser in the middle

I have tried booting into safe mode, no luck

I can press control alt delete and open task manager, but it is the only window I can see

This is the third time in one week that this has happened, I have been fixing it by restoring it to a system image

I don't want to restore it again, please help

i had a similar issue on one of my linux systems a few days back, ended up being the gpu drivers.

 

do you have an other gpu / onboard graphics to test with?

is it the machine on your profile? that has onboard graphics, doesnt it?

according to your profile you have a gtx980 and a 4790k, try taking out the 980 and just using the onchip gpu to see if you experience similar problems.
