A decade ago, the Swedish startup built its seminal streaming music service atop a small number of machines inside a Scandinavian data center, before expanding across this facility and into data centers in the United Kingdom and the US. Now, Spotify has resolved to move its entire service out of these data centers and onto cloud computing services operated by Google.

Google is best known for running a search engine, an email service, a maps app, and so many other online tools for the world’s consumers. But a big part of the company’s genius is that, over the last decade-and-a-half, it has built a worldwide network of machines that can run all those consumers services with unusual speed and efficiency. And in recent years, it has invited other business and coders to build their own software on this vast online infrastructure, so they needn’t worrying about running their own machines. This is called cloud computing.

There's a lot of business related topics in the article so if your into that check that out.  But basically spotify uses google's cloud for its data now.

personally i like google music, and think its kinda funny that they swtich over, xD give more money to google derp lol xD.

I like Google Play over Spotify as well, just because of the bundled stuff you get.

However, they probably made the move because it's more secure. This was probably planned months and months in advanced as Spotify grows.

Ha. Didn't know they even had one.

I wish they'd remove the DRM check for each play, or whatever causes the delay for songs you don't actually own but can listen to offline.

They also need an offline desktop client.

Compared to Spotify's near instant song skip, Google Play is slow when you don't actually own the song.

i mean it takes a blink of an eye for it to switch so it doesn't really bother. On my phone and pc.

On my chromecast tho it takes a second or so which does get annoying.

Spotify isn't the fastest either but that may just be shitty laptop limitations kek

Do you actually own the music, though? Or are you accessing it with just the subscription service?

Because it's never been instant for me on any device I use.

no, all from subscription.

it isn't instant, but also isn't enough for me to notice.

Do you have it saved on your phone or always pulling from cloud?

Saved to my phone. What I'm just saying is that it's not as quick as Spotify when you change songs. The app is sorta slow overall as well.

I use Google Play Music and I quite like it and of course I'm gona support my fav composers and music companies so I buy the albums(usually 3.99 euros for an album in my case which is pretty good imo).

Spotify Free is a big piece of annoying shit with its ads but I still use it in case there are some albums that aren't on Gplay Music. And you basically can't do anything on Spotify Free on mobile, especially if you don't have an online connection. On PC it's better but still, the ads are sooo annoying lol.

Spotify with a sub though is really awesome but I don't feel like paying around 6 or however many euros every month :/

Specs of my PC:

CPU: AMD FX 8350  Motherboard: Gigabyte 990XA UD3  GPU: Gigabyte GTX 770 Windforce 2GB  HDD: WD Green 2TB SSD:  Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD RAM: Corsair 8GB(2X4) PSU: CoolerMaster G650M

Spotify is the biggest music streaming in Scandinavia, does not surprise anyone I hope.

I use Spotify, I would maybe switch to Google Music, but then Google Music would have to get better first... like on desktops.

On topic: This won't really affect the users so they won't care, but the article does a pretty decent job at explaining what is exactly happening and why. As far as I'm concerned, I wish Spotify was available in Romania. So far, the only streaming services here are Google's own Play Music, which I use and find pretty great, despite the app being a bit prone to crashes and some local thing from Vodafone called Zonga which is pretty ugly, but free for their subscribers.
