Retail: More expensive. You can contact and receive support directly from Microsoft at no charge (i.e. phone support for techincal problems). It is unknown how useful or helpful that support will be...but you can use it. If you change your motherboard or buy another computer you can reinstall your windows license on that machine so long as you confirm that it has been removed from the first machine. You are allowed to have your windows license installed on one machine total but you can reinstall to new machines in the future.

OEM: Cheaper. No support from Microsoft. If your processor or motherboard is changed you will not be able to move your license to the new machine as it is locked to the machine it was originally installed to. (some users report they have gotten microsoft to allow them to move an OEM license after a "hardware failure". However, this is not guaranteed to be the case as it is in direct opposition to the license. Maybe you get lucky, maybe you don't and you have to buy a new key.

@Neo0152 As said above you dont have any assistance,Put simply if you buy a PC the manufactura is to help you if say you have to swap mobo and need to re-validate windows key. With OEM you are the system builder and therefore have to sort that out but it is not too difficult, just do it over the phone. :)

So if you buy Retail, if you have a hardware faliure they (being microsoft) "should" sort out any problem with a key If you have to switch out Motherboard (windows key stores system data so you cant transfer between systems). If you go OEM you have to sort it out, Contact microsoft support and say you have had a hardware faliure and you should have you windows re-activated. That is really the only change.

To correct posts above you CAN NOT transfer RETAIL version of windows 10 as it is hardware locked :)
