I'm hoping someone has experience with this, but I currently run a GTX 970 and I just ordered a 1440p monitor. Should I consider upgrading to a 980, Fury, or even a 980ti and sell the 970 or will the 970 handle 1440p. For added information I play games like Dragon Inquisition, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed and occasionally play some FPS games.

I would hate to upgrade only to see a minimal performance gain, I'm not sure how the 390x stacks up against the 970 in real world application. That's why I am hoping someone has experience with some of these cards. I know what benchmarks say, but I've seen some skewed results across the board.

I have a 980 on 1440p and generally it can handle it on high. Though games like Black Ops 3 and GTA V really strain it at Very High (GTA) and High (BO3)

If you are going to upgrade, don't go Fury X, the 4GB vRAM is not worth it.

I would imagine the 500MB slow chunk on the 970 would be a problem at 1440p more than the core.

So, what were getting at is the 970 would not be the best choice here and a 390x or 980 would be viable options here.

980 is a faster card, but the 390X has more vRAM. So it depends on what you play, and if you have a PSU and case that can house the 390X. Which is quite warm.

Just stick with the GTX 970. It'll do decently at 1440p and I can't justify both the hassle and money to get a card that'll perform just a bit better.

As long as you turn down the settings a bit and turn down AA, you should be run 1440p just fine.

Corsair RM750 and a 750D outfitted with fractal venture fans so cooling is not a issue.

You could run two 980s on that. Also, they are very quiet if you get something like an EVGA card.

If you plan to buy soon. You can get a 980 for $380 on EVGA B stock. http://www.evga.com/Products/ProductList.aspx?type=8

How reliable is this? I understand EVGA has great customer service, but there is a reason for the substantial discount.

They are products that have been returned or RMA'd and EVGA fixes them and resells them. They might have some physical wear, but they function as if they were new and you get a 1 year warranty. Which is better than Ebay.

Try on your 970 first. If it doesn't work out, I'd probably wait for new gen cards. But they probably won't do wonders seeing how a Titan X or 980 Ti still get stuttering issues and sub 60fps.
