I7 5820k or i7 4790k?

simple answer

if you only want to game 4790k will perform better than a 5820k

and if you can afford a 5820k why not go for a 6700k

it will kill both of the above in single core performance(gaming)

if you only want to game, get an I5, the difference is waaayyy too small, for the performance boost, too much money? get a fancier GPU or bigger SSD when you need it

to game or not to game, that`s the question

I know they use the 5930K, but the 5930K and 5820K are practically the same thing.

Just the 5930K has a slightly higher clock rate and a higher cache.

EDIT: derp, your profile has it, get a better PSU and maybe get a better GPU or get another one, if you`re not rendering, you barely notice it

Then instead of upgrading the CPU, do one of the following:

  1. Upgrade your monitor. Maybe. Not sure on what you have.
  2. Sell your 980 and get a 980ti.
  3. Hold out and wait for Zen / Kaby lake, so you do a full system upgrade at once.
  4. Simply save the money and do nothing.

I would get the 4790k because that way you do not have to buy a new motherboard and RAM like you would of you went the 5820K or the 6700K.

My Work in Progress PC http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/522048-xeon-build/ <-- That PC was built but never booted:(

ahhh, now I see it, had to gaze upon the post way too long to notice, either way, no, he shouldn`t get it, a little bit of video;

I would never spend soooo much money for something that I barely ever use, but it`s his choice, maybe if he has enough money to spare

to game or not to game, that`s the question

It also has 40 PCI lanes versus 28, but your point still stands.

This. I was about to ask what your current setup is.

Well, you can't SLI a 980ti with a 980, and a 980SLI really isn't as good as a single GPU, so.......

Still, do as you wish.

The 4790K will not be a huge upgrade to what you have now but it will be noticeable when you are doing anything that can take advantage of the hyperthreading like rendering. Also you could get slightly higher clock speeds than you can on the 4690k.
