AMD Black Edition Processors

Hello LTT community.

 

Do you have to liquid cool AMD's Black Edition processors??? Just wondering.......................

No you do not, but you do need a good robust (AIR) Cooler at the least, Depending on what it is 83__-85__

"Black Edition" is the same as Intel's "K" Processors. I have been using a regular, but beefy, air cooler on my " Black Edition" Phenom II X4 955, Phenom II X6 1090T, and FX-8350.

Ok cause my CPU is roasting with a 212 Evo cooler and Arctic Silver 5 paste at stock speeds

Which CPU are you using?

Make sure the cooler is PROPERLY mounted (did you take off the clear sticker on the bottom of the heatsink?).

the Athlon x4 860k. and YES I took off the clear sticker

As far as I'm aware, there's not actually any difference between the Black Edition and non-Black edition (at least, not in terms of the CPU itself). Both have unlocked multipliers, just the black editions don't come with coolers. They may be binned a bit better, but other than that it seems to be primarily marketing, rather than indicating the CPU being locked down like the non-K Intel SKUs.

that's way too hot, try reseating the cooler.

As far as I am aware, all socket AM3+ Processors have an unlocked multiplier. The previous generation CPU's, found on socket AM3 / AM2+ / AM2, only had an unlocked multiplier only if they had the "Black Edition" within the naming.

 

For an example, with the Phenom II X6 line-up.

Unlocked CPU multiplier: Phenom II X6 1090T

Locked CPU multiplier: Phenom II X6 1055T

 

Another, socket AM2 with the Athlon 64 X2's.

Unlocked CPU multiplier: Athlon 64 X2 5000+ "Black Edition"

Locked CPU multiplier: Athlon 64 X2 6000+

 

It seems like AMD then decided to "copy" Intel by using the "K" naming convention for unlocked chips with their APUs.

Unlocked CPU multiplier:  A8-7670K (socket FM2+)

Locked CPU multiplier: A8-7600 (socket FM2+)

 

 

@Conorator999999 Your Athlon X4 860K is definitely running hotter than it should be with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

What is are the temperature readings while sitting in the motherboard BIOS?

What program are you using to check your temperature readings -- and are you looking at the proper read-out?

 

Post a screenshot of your temperature, please.

Some software do not give you the correct temperature reading listed under "CPU" -- especially for some AMD Processors.

 

Post your full system specifications too, so we know what we are working with

• CPU?
• Motherboard (make/brand and model)?
• RAM (brand, spec, and amount)?
• Graphics card (make/brand and model)?
• Power Supply (make/brand and model)?
• Computer Case?
• Operating system?
• etc...
