Non Consumer Holiday?

So today is Valentines Day. A day created to sell roses, cards and candy. Then there is Christmas, a day to sell presents. Halloween...a day to sell candy. Thanksgiving...a day to buy more food and gas. Even Veterans Day is all about selling Yellow Ribbons. Are there any holidays left that haven't been commercialized? Victory over Japan Day? Is this just a US thing or is it like this all over the world?

This is one thing I have never understood. Why is commercialization necessarily a bad thiing? The only reason a holiday can become commercial is if the people allow it to, and people have allowed it.

And why should you even care. No one is forcing you to celebrate any holiday. I don't celebrate any holiday that I know of. I don't even celebrate my birthday. 

 

And no, we don't celebrate Victory over Japan Day in Denmark. I didn't even know that was a thing.

Because it weakens the point of the holiday. Valentines Day should be about love, not how many roses you buy for them. Veterans day should be honoring those that died for our freedom, not having someone profit from it. And people didn't "allow" it anymore then they allowed TV commercials and spam. It was forced down out throat by profiteering gluttons. Celebrate the real holiday, not what commercialized industry tells you to celebrate. Don't be like these people..

But you just said that Valentines day was created to sell stuff, so wouldn't buying stuff be the correct way of celebrating it?

How can yellow ribbons be a commercialization of Veterans Day? I don't know much about American holidays, but I doubt that the ribbon industry is big enough to hold an iron grip on that day. 

 

And yes, people did allow their holidays to get commercial. TV commercials wouldn't exist if people weren't ready to buy. People want to buy stuff and there is an industry ready to serve them what they want. 

Consumers aren't just mindless sheep following whatever a commercial is feeding them. When all is said and done, they are the ones feeding the commercial.

Valentines Day was created by the Hallmark Corp. There really is no significance for this day. If you have someone in your life that you love and care for, you should show it to them every day and not just on one single day.

When I said it, my point was that was a negative fact. Most holidays are based on rich cultural traditions. Ask a Wiccan about Halloween. Ask a Veteran about Veteran's Day(US only?). In other countries items are sold for people to celebrate the holiday, it seems in the US, industry takes over the holiday and suggest what people should celebrate. Example, before 1931, Santa Claus wasn't red.

I am pretty sure Christmas isn't a day to sell presents. A lot of people go to church you know. Also thanksgiving was a big feast you know in the past so we have food now. I don't really get your point but I know some holidays have been completely made up by companies.

I know you meant it as a negative, but I just wanted to know why it was negative. I here a lot of people scream about the commercialization of the holidays, but every one jyst seems to accept that commercial = bad, and I don't really see that as a valid dichotomy. 

Atleast, I won't accept it without an explanation.

It is a negative because global organizations should stay out of personal, cultural rituals. Or watch this video.. (NSFW) I don't want Coke in my Christmas just like I don't want Tony The Tiger involved in a conversation about abortion.

I would like to argue that there is a major difference between a cultural holiday and horrible marketing. 

 

A lot of wastern cultural rituals today are global, so catering to those rituals will reach a global market. I have celebrated christmas in Japan, I have seen people in Nigeria celebrate International Workers' Day and I have participated in International Speak Like a Pirate Day in Oklahoma. 

 

Also, those global organizations are also a part of the culture. Companies are run by people that celebrate culturel rituals.

I will bet that the head of marketing at Coca Cola also celebrates christmas.

 

And I will have to say that I, for the most part, doesn't really agree with John Oliver on this topic. 

I don't see anything wrong with Fleshlight wanting to commemorate 9/11. They are also a part of the culture that experienced 9/11.

 

So again I have to ask, why? Why is it wrong for global organizations to mingle with cultural rituals? If they are a part of them, why aren't they allowed to participate?
