Ram performance...

I'm upgrading my memory and was wondering if there is a performance benefit or hit if I populate all 4 ram slots as opposed to just getting 2 modules.

As @Godlygamer23 mentioned you need to explain what the rig will be used for.

Case = Bitfenix Prodigy, Motherboard = P8Z77 - I Deluxe, CPU = 3570k @ 4.2GHz, RAM = 2x 8GB G-Skill Ripjaws, GPU = Sapphire 7950 Boost Edition, Storage = 256GB Samsung 840 Pro.

gaming mostly but I do develop in opengl within arch Linux.

and if it matters at all I'm shooting for a grand total of 16gb.

I would say only two sticks would be beneficial unless developing OpenGL in Linux is RAM bandwidth intensive.

Two 8GB Sticks will be fine. Get them ASAP as prices are likely to rise soon.

4 sticks will spread the load usage better but that preformance increase is almost unnoticable.

I'd say, go for 2 sticks so if you'd want to upgrade in the future, you can just buy an additional 2 sticks of ram instead of buying 4 new sticks.
