No Linux support for GOG's 'foreseeable future'

GOG will not offer support for Linux in the "foreseeable future" due to the fragmentation inherent in the operating system's open-source nature, GOG's Head of PR and Marketing Trevor Longino told GamingOnLinux last week.

PR Representative Piotr Szczesniak added that GOG's previous investigation into supporting Mint, Debian and Google's Chrome OS suggested the hypothetical revenue would not account for the potential amount of work involved with rebuilding games for every major OS update.

Despite noting that there's "no way that the economics of Linux support make sense for us," Szczesniak also stated that GOG is "investigating how to do this for a variety of issues beyond Linux support, so don't give up hope. Just don't expect it tomorrow, either."

Linux support will always be an afterthought until it gains a larger market share, but another OS competitor would help force Apple and Microsoft to worm harder rather than rest on their pretty stable current market shares

Well then consolidate it to one Linux OS.

Since Ubuntu is Valve's go-to, just support Ubuntu then, or Mint.

If you support at least one distribution then people will just take that and make their own support for other distributions.

Linux needs to get more Steam support, but it also needs to get more program support and the OS needs to get more like Windows until people start to migrate in big numbers. I tried out Linux and I didn't like the OS but if there was a version that was just like WIndows 7 I would migrate to that in a heartbeat although there would be no games to play really. Native game support would make everyone get rid of Windows I think.

The nice thing about open source software is that if you can imagine something, it's already been done.

Native gaming is still in its infancy.

Looks like I will be switching sooner then anticipated. The only things that need to be done are better looking visuals for the OS eg. Aero (I love me some aero) and more options, because there can never be enough. Also native gaming support.

As much as this is true. You can see that this a developer only that touched this, and not a graphic artists. It's unpolished, and amateurish looking. Much like the other GUI.

I think Mint is the best one by far. But this is something that community needs to get, to get nicely polished, professional looking, interface. And the poor font issue is still not fixed. I know that making GUI and font rendering engine is something that is quite painful for developers as its seen as extremely boring and hard, hence why devs that know about GUI and love making them, are paid more, as there is few people willing to take such job.

But they must find a way to get some help.

I have to ask, why do so many people love Aero?

All I see it as is a GUI that has a bit of color, which is annoying. Here is my desktop. Is it boring? More than likely. Is it simple? Yes, and that's why I love it.

I can't be the only one here.

No I like your desktop to but If you add aero to your desktop it can look a lot nicer especially if you change some stuff on it. I like to change mine every now and then to freshen my desktop up.

Fair enough. There is a DIY method though:

Cool. But again no attention to details.

The position of the title bar on window is too thin, the text and program icon and button are miss positioned. The task bar is a picture stretch, you are not suppose to get the glass effect. Task bar button are too close together for the theme, notification bar is a background color, and not part of the task bar. Show desktop button (far right, bottom), is actually minimize all, and it a large button.

And that is just at an overview level. You can see visibly that there is more issues.

To me it looks like the following was said "FIIIINE! I'll do a stupid Win7 skin.... HERE take it or leave it... I got better things to do". There is no passion, no love, no dedication, put into this.

Which is a shame. I think that the Linux community should do.... well I guess xWindows, or Gnome, should make/form a small team dedicated at finding dedicated and enthusiasts artists on doing GUI work, and have them join in, in exchange to full credit on their work, visible or something... and make a proper polished GUI for xWindows environment, where the dev team spend time with dedication to do everything right.

And another team (or the same) work on the Font rendering engine to get it to properly show text sharply, and a new font that takes advantage of it. That would be ideal. If I had free time (ie: finished school), I would help.

Sadly, the dev team isn't interested, as they see a need and work on it. We are in 2013.. I would perfectly understand if we ere in 2001 or even 2005, but I mean come on!.

The lack of a nice polish interface, is not inviting. In fact, we all know how first impression counts the most. Well, when people see this, they don't have a good reaction. Yes sure, many don't care, or simply knows what Linux is, and it's power, but those who don't sees such interface, and are simply not interested. Which is a shame.

And because I am on the GUI 99.99% of the time, or what I expect, when I use Linux (which isn't the case at all, but should be...Although Ubuntu is doing good work in rectifying this problem), it needs to be inviting, and polished. I am not saying that Windows is perfect either. (http://www.windows7taskforce.com/p/1), but hey it's much better.
