Do you have a computer now?  If so, how much RAM are you using on load?  I would go for 16 just to be safe.  Most DDR3 ram is good.  Just pick a popular brand with a heatsink color that matches the build.

i5-4690k@4.5GHz || MSI GTX 970 || MSI z97 Gaming 5 || NZXT Kraken x61 || WD Black 1TB || Crucial MX100 || 8GB Corsair Vengeance Pro || Corsair RM750 || NZXT H440 || Corsair k70 RGB mx browns || Acer H236HL || ViewSonic VX2255wm-4

For gaming you really only need 8 gb of ram so don't waste the extra money on ram that wont get used. And 1600 mhz or 1866 mhz will be fine. Just find something that matches the rest of your build.

I would really only be concerned with the speed of the ram if you do not have a discrete video card.  Otherwise 1600mhz is fine.. get more if you like but it's not going to make a notable difference.

my work in progress

i5 6600k  //  16gb g.skill ddr4 3000  //  evga gtx 980

Sometimes faster RAM helps a bit.

Some motherboard only supports up to a certain speed. I recommend checking your motherboard first.

unless your using the onboard GPU, no not at all, 1600 is pretty fine for most workloads unless your running like a ton of VM's. If you are using the onboard GPU, then do get faster ram. but do be careful, I had an experience with my mobo where is claimed 1866 mhz ram was compatible (even without OC'ing the memory) but it refused to boot or post or do anything, so I returned that RAM, stuck some 1600 mhz ram in it and it worked perfectly fine.

First check your mother board, how much speed of ram it can support, than go for a good brand which provide good warranty. And 8 gb is enough. For speed 1600 MHz is fine.
