I've got 2 ASUS Matrix AMD Radeon HD 5870's in Crossfire Mode. With age they have started to run hotter and gotten loud, very loud. I've kept them clean and did replace the thermal paste recently thinking that was possibly hindering cooling with minimal success. Saw a 1-2°C drop but not much else and that is still in margin of error for temp reading anyway. At this point I'm looking at aftermarket cooling that will run me $180-$200 for both cards. I looked at both air solutions and closed loop water cooling. I feel like for that price I should be close to getting a new single card with similar if not slightly better performance but I'm having trouble finding any real direct comparison between Crossfired 5970's and newer single video cards. Any suggestions?

A single 5870 is about half the performance of a 7970(r9 280x) so if you crossfire 2 and have perfect scaling(I doubt it) you would have similar performance to a 7970 or 280x.

the R9 380/X will be a great GPU to replace your CF 5870s

5870 = 1600/80 = 20cc (1GB - DX11)

CF 5870 = 40cc (1GB eVram - DX11)

R9 390 = 2560/64 = 40cc (8GB eVram - DX12)

(but the Nitro 380 4GB alone win the CF 5870 anyway i think) ;)

APU = A10
