Hey guys I want a little more speed on my laptop. Heres what I was thinking. I already have a 1tb hdd in my laptop and I want to put a ssd as a boot drive and thats it. I can buy a 2.5inch drive bay that goes in the dvd player slot. I'm thinking about just using a 32gb ssd because I only want it as a boot drive and not for storage. What do you think?

Get a 120gb or 60gb, 32gb isnt really leaving wiggle room for win XX or updates/service packs

If you are not going to put ANYTHING except the OS and a couple of programs on it , okay. But I'd recommend going 120 gig and putting all the programs and some games on it. Believe me the games load time are like 1/10 on the SSD compared to a laptop HDD , at least in my case

My laptop isn't powerful enough to play much of any games except gta san andres. But yea all I would do with the 32gb ssd is put windows 7 on it and then chrome and maybe a few other programs. I just want faster boot times and I want to stay under $70

For a boot drive, you may want something a bit bigger than that, perhaps 64GB because you'll need to install some drivers, programs, etc.

I personally threw in a 128GB ADATA SX900 into my HP G6 and it has been great.

I plan on getting a 240gb ssd and putting it into my gaming pc. But on my laptop the sole purpose for the ssd would be for boot times. and remember I can install the other programs on the 1tb drive whichs what I plan on doing

if you can't go around a 32 GB or 60 GB SSD, try using it for cache, I believe it to be more effecient.

If you do go for the smaller boot drive check benchmarks as some dont run that fast. M4 60gb is a good example of that its neary half the wright speed of the M4 120gb

Your OS is like 20 gigs(not just the file size but also some free space for win files to move around), put some drivers and programs and you got 75% of your drive full. That's what i said that if you don't need to put anything else on there , maybe. Putting programs on the HDD , it can be done but depends on the program to see if it's worth it or not.

Then in your case I'd go and buy the fastest 32 gig thing you can, install all the programs on it and leave like 5 gigs free on it. Also I'd move "My pictures, movies, videos, downloads, documents". If you are interested to show you how to do it, you can tell me :)

Get a 120/128GB ssd--it's not much more.

Also, there aren't that many decent low capacity low priced  ssds.

In my gaming pc right now I have a 2tb hd thats also running as my boot drive. i also have a 320gb and a 160gb hd. The 320gb hd has 2 partions one is 160gb so I can run it in raid 0 with the 160gb hd and then whats leftover of the 320gb hard drive I just use for random files. I'm thinking about taking the 1tb drive out of my laptop and then putting the other 2 laptop drives and running them in raid 0 like I currently have them in my gaming pc. Idk though because ever since I started doing the raid my rendering time has been a lot faster and I like that. but idk if I want to sacrifice them. But idk. So if your not confused by what I just said. What do you think?

A decent ssd will beat any hdd raid.

How would I configure it to do that?

Either on a hardware level or on a software level.

Intel includes it under their RAID-controller.

There's plenty of SSD-Chaching software out there, can't tell you which though, (I run it on a hardware level).

+1 I would get a 120GB SSD like the Samsung 840 Evo as your boot drive.

32gb for a boot drive.............GOD NO!!!!

Windows will barely function, you will not be able to have hibernation mode, or a page file running off the SSD, which on a laptop is pretty essential.

A fully functioning windows install these days is closer to 40GB, get a minimum of 64GB preferably 128gb.

Not to mention no room for programs, I mean whats the point of having an SSD if you are not going to run you programs off it?

32gb for cache, yup worth it.

is there anyway to cache something with a raid 0 array?

Of course there is, I'm currently running a 2 x 1TB RAID0 setup with a 60GB SSD for caching.

You'd need to look into your raid controller for that.

Or just use SSD-caching software like you would with a normal HDD.

you'd need space for 3 harddrives if you plan a RAID with SSD-caching though

theoretically yes, but I wouldn't advise it nor could I say if there's such software available.

Cool idea though.
