Antivirus Version and virus definition updates

Camsung

My mom has Norton Internet Security 2012. It is asking her to upgrade to 2013 (for free) but she doesn't want the hassle. Will she still continue to have the latest virus definitions with the 2012 version? Will using 2012 be just as secure as 2013?

Just use Microsoft Security Essentials + MalwareBytes free.

They'll do the trick.

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.
But I'd say you need the latest antivirus version or you might as well not have an antivirus program.

This.

Them offering it for free kinda means they realllly want you to upgrade. That implies, to me, that the current one you are using (2012) is not good enough.

1. My mom is a computer noob and she is uncomfortable with me "tweaking" her machine (I've tried to convince her to buy Kaspersky but every since I accidentally cleared her Chrome cache and wiped her passwords she hasn't let me touch it :()

2. Norton 2012 still says it has been updated to the latest database, so I'm not sure why she needs 2013.

I say just get rid of Norton and put on Avast. Just disable the pop-ups and sounds and set the updates to automatic and she'll never know the difference.

Maybe scare her about, fear is a motivational factor.
Tell her about the consequences of an insecure system, online banking and whatnot...

uninstall norton and get something better first :P

According to the reviews, Norton's recent anti-virus versions are good programs.

It hogs RAM.

Norton 2013 just has some changes in the SONAR module and it does still use the latest definitions even though its a 2012 version:https://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Does-NIS2013-have-better-protection-than-NIS2012/td-p/837388

I use avast but I put AVG because Logan mentioned it in one of his vids. (The one where he tells you what to do when you get a new computer)

...Are you guys running rigs with like 2GB of RAM? I have 16GB and AVG doesn't effect my computer in the slightest bit, it can hog all the RAM it wants as long as my performance doesn't suffer, it's a great anti-virus imo

If your program keeps updating it will be just fine, if it doesn't then it cant protect against the newest threats because the program wont have the updated definitions. just dont use porn sites or torrent anything and you will be fine. Since everyone is recommending stuff I am going to say get Kaspersky!

Actually with my newest rig I haven't used any anti-virus aside from MS Security Essentials, torrented a ton of stuff and went some places I shouldn't have on the internet and I'm still clean! :x

Why does everyone hate Norton...? It's one of the least resource intensive according to most reviews

It costs money. When there are free alternatives that could very easily be better, why spend the money?

I have Windows 8 and an SSD boot drive. I cannot notice any difference either way. 30 seconds from Desktop back to Desktop with Restart.
