List here all your issues with MSI R9 390/290/X overheating. I just want to gather some ideas of how to cool them better.

If it is the only device plugged into the expansion slots on the motherboard and it is a standard ATX sized case, put a 92mm fan over the empty expansion slots to draw cool air in

You need good airflow in the case. From what I've seen, they choke easily if you deprive them of airflow.

It's not gonna overheat at stock as long as you have good airflow. I'd consider good airflow as 2 unrestricted 120mm's, at least 40cfm, drawing air in and 1 120mm drawing air out. That's good enough. Overclocked is a different story. The cooler simply cannot keep up with +100mv which was necessary to achieve +60mhz on the core. It was hot, 87c, and loud as heck. I'd stay away from the MSI 390x or any 390x in general actually unless you can snag one for cheap. Here's what I did

Might've seen my rig too which has a 390x and a 290

I had 290X for several months, from Asus. X version is more hot than no X version? I now have MSI 390, but not as long as previous GPU. It's better. With 290X highest was 87, one time only. With 390 it is 77. I have Cooler Master 690 II Advanced - 1 intake, and 2 outtake. Plus nets to keep dust out. I can add 3 more, don't know if I need it, and how much it would help, but I will see in summer.
