High quality youtube vids use more CPU or GPU?

Saiyan

Just wondering if when I'm watching youtube videos in 1440 or 4k with my gtx 970, (No I don't have a 4k monitor but still) my CPU temps shoots up from 33 idle to around 50 in 4k videos. CAM says that my GPU (970) is at 4% load when the video is fullscreen but yet my CPU (4790k) is at 50% load. I always thought that watching fullscreen high quality videos would put more work on the GPU. Just wondering if watching high quality videos like that should be putting more load on my CPU instead of GPU.

I've never touched any of the GPU software since I installed the drivers though. When I load GTA V in Steam my fans on my GPU turn on (because they only turn on if the temps get at a certain temp) so I know that it's working for GTA, I just didn't know why my CPU % was so high but yet my GPU wasn't. I'm loading the 4k videos fine, I just wanna make sure my GPU is correctly working otherwise.

I think its just a tiny bit more CPU, mainly both.

Current Build: Core i7 4790k @ 4.6, Asus Maximus VII Hero, Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400mhz 8gb (2x4gb), GTX 980ti, NZXT Kraken X61, Fractal Define R5  EVGA Supernova B2 850w, Some 300gb hard drive.

Even with hardware acceleration on, youtube video decompressing (because it's compessed) is mostly done on the CPU but the GPU will also have a slightly higher load because it does have to downscale the 8k video to the screen size of the youtube video window and display it, just try the below video at full 8k res and see what it does to the usage.

Right after I posted this my temps started around matching. Just that one read of 50% CPU and 5% GPU had me wondering, but it's all good.

That's because the CPU is processing every single thing that's running on your pc, the gpu is just displaying an image. It's not like the gpu is rendering a 3D game or anything.

I run the video fine and smoothly in 4k, but 8k.. stuttering and my CPU shot up to around 88% load  when my GPU was sitting around 47% load
