Okay, so I got a new Skylake build just finished. I'm having a problem with my CPU temp misreadings. Right now on HWMonitor its reading between 12-14c across all cores on my 6700K. Sometimes it would jump all the way up to 43c back down to 11.That is impossible since my ambient is around 20c. My 4790K doesn't behave like that. What in the world is going on? Is my CPU bad? Is it my motherboard? I still have 30 days to return it to Amazon but would hate to keep trying to get a stable CPU/Mobo. What might be the cause of my problem guys? Can someone help a brother out? :( I would hate to take shit apart and do it all over again. Uggghhh.

And I thought Intel had great quality control... pfft.

Have you tried a different temp monitoring program like Real Temp and/or checked what the temperature reads at in BIOS? HWMonitor has given me some wonky readings in the past.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

There is definitely something wrong with the sensor.  It is impossible for your chip to be below room temperature with any air or liquid cooler not using phase change, liquid nitrogen, etc.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I have. I updated the BIOS, downloaded the latest monitoring software and they all read the same strange temps. In the BIOS it reads between 20-23 if that helps.

Does Skylake have a known bug or anything? I'm really at a loss for words here...

Unless you live in a refrigerator, yeah, something's up with your temperature sensor.

Would really hate to send it back. I guess it's always possible I got a bad CPU. I did get it 3rd party fulfilled by Amazon, not directly from them if that means anything. Accurate temps are important to me seeing as how Intel integrates the sensors into the die itself.

Yeah if this is reding wrong you don't know what else might be messed up.  I wouldn't trust it, but that's just me...

As least it isn't this:

Lol!

SO would this issue be my CPU or MoBo?

I think my best course of action is to send the stuff back and retry. If that fails, I may just go the X99 route since that is tried and true.

I would think it's almost certainly the CPU, but I can't 100% rule out the possibility it is a motherboard issue... still, I'd say 99% likely it's the CPU

Asus uses a special CPU temperature register of the NCT6776F sensor chip on a few of their motherboards. Most hardware monitoring software don't even know that register exists.

Sure is. Maximus VIII Hero. I tend to go Asus as I had really like the VII Hero. But if its the board.... well I may be inclined to return it and buy maybe the MSI Gaming or the Gigabyte something something.

Can ASUS release a firmware update to fix the sensor issue?

You can try to download  the latest beta version of AIDA64 Extreme Edition and restart Windows to fix this.

Sounds to me like the "problem" is just in that software doesn't know how to read it properly, but in theory, there is nothing wrong with the system and it at least knows its own temperatures correctly.  I would say that in this case the ASUS software will probably work for reading it right, but I've seen ASUS software before...

Okay,, so I downloaded the software (Feb 6 beta build) and it is still reading 10-14c across the cores. After restart, I checked the bios and it gave me a temp of 22-23. Is the BIOS correct then? Because my 4790K also read the same temps in bios. There is something strange going on. So if its not the CPU, then the mobo is to blame?

And yea your bios temperatur readings should be correct. This is a software reading failure. 100% sure.
