Indeed a hard one hehe. But i hope some1 will atleast be able to help you with the post on the Asus ROG forum.

Asus mod replied to my concern:

"Hello

Reported idle temps below ambient is not uncommon with Skylake. It is due to the calibration of the DTS sensors by Intel. There is no fix for this at the motherboard level."

I went to check load temps, playing a quick 10 mins of Just Cause 3 and CPU temps were in the mid-upper 20's. About 3-4c cooler than my 4790K. I'll do more extensive testing with games tomorrow, but I at least saw signs of realistic load temps that I can refer (4790K) to. :)

Mid-upper 20s are not normal load temps.  you should be seeing 40s, minimum under a stress test.  It's possible that game just isn't taxing it much, but even then, that's low

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

My 4790K is the same way. Never went all that high except in Witcher 3, Crysis 3 etc. Just remember that my PC's are in the basement in ~ 20c ambient temperature. I've already ordered a replacement 6700K directly from Amazon, and $50 bucks cheaper. :D I'm debating sending back my VIII Hero and getting something different. I don't feel comfortable not having accurate temp readings.

Make sure you are checking a log of the temperatures, and not just trying to quickly switch to the monitor after playing.  1, games will not really work the CPU that hard, and 2, it can cool off by 10+ degrees in like a second.

What's a good way to log temps? Weird thing is that these aren't likely accurate temps as I'm not sure logging will do much.

I think I just got a bad CPU. When I got it, it had these gray lines near the edges on the heat spreader that wiped off with isopropyl. Was bought via 3rd party on Amazon. I don't think Intel would box these with marks on the heat spreader would they? Also going to replace the mobo. I figure hit 2 birds with one stone just in case.

Do you have any suggestions for a Z170 mobo? My second choice was the ASRock Z170 OC Formula. Also checked out the MSI Gaming M7 and Gigabyte G1 Gaming 7.

Yeah I don't think they're accurate either :)  That's why I was saying adjust your method of checking - I thought you thought that they were accurate now, sorry

It can be as simple as leave HWMonitor open while you game (or better yet run an actual stress test) and then just check the "max" (it shows current, min and max reached while it's been open), or something like MSI Afterburner - it will keep a graph of temps, usage, etc for your CPU, GPU, memory usage, and lots of other stuff.  Just check it after you've run the test.

They do sometimes have marks on the heat spreader.  There was a post about that a few months ago, everyone said to just wipe them off, and if you can, then there's no harm (it's not like a scratch then)

Don't know about the motherboard.  Pretty much any ASUS or MSI should be great...
