Windows 10, quick question.

Still running Windows 7 on my main pc, but its in dire need of a clean install. Installed Windows 10 on the pc in my livingroom, just to test it out a bit and see how i like it, seems alright and im thinking about rolling it out on my main pc. One quick question tho, if i do a clean install of Windows 10 and use my Windows 7 key, then find out i actually want to go back to Windows 7, can i still use that key to do a clean Windows 7 install or is it then locked to just using Windows 10? :S

I went back to 7 on my laptop for reasons, so I think it still works unless they've very recently changed something massive.

Basically, when you upgrade, they grant you a Win 10 license, but it doesn't replace your old one.  That would be theft :)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

As long as you aren't running it on two installs simultaneously the key should work on both.

You should also have the ability to 'Upgrade' to Windows 10 from within your Windows 7, but not keeping any personal files/programs. This would allow you to do a 'fresh' install while maintaining the ability to rollback to Windows 7 if necessary. :)

Almost as cool as my temps

Except that, if his 7 install is really messed up, that might not work... just maybe

It should only pull through the system (Windows) files and no personal programs, so any clutter he has installed shouldn't be a factor :)

As long as your Windows 7 is currently working (even at a snail's pace ;))

Yeah, but my Windows 7 install is not doing so good at the moment, i do know about the "fresh" install where you can keep your programs, but i think a clean install would very much be the best thing right now.

Its not messed up that much, but my pc is starting to feel sluggish from not being cleanly installed for a while ;)

That's what I mean, it upgrades to a 'fresh/clean' install of Windows 10 without any of your programs or files, while keeping your Windows 7 system files and nothing else, should you want to rollback.

Im not 100% sure how the "clean update" works exactly, but in general i really do like doing a clean install, its a pain to reinstall programs again, but i guess i could give the update a try, if its no good, i can always do a clean install after.

That sounds like something someone who still uses an HDD for a boot drive would say... do you?  If you're upgrading, now would be the perfect time to get an SSD! :)

Just what I did on my system with a skylake upgrade from my old Nehalem system.

And if you do a clean install just reinstall W7 upgrade to W10 and in case you don't like it roll back to W7 again. :)

Nah im actually running 100% SSD, 840 pro, 840 evo and 850 evo :) Its just been a long time since i did a clean install of my OS and sluggish might be the wrong word, but some things just dont feel like they are running 100% right, the pc is not slow in that sense.

Okay, just gonna do a full clean install and if i for some reason cant use the key at some point for WIndows 7 anymore and i dont like 10, i can always buy a new Windows 7 key, a friend of mine always have left over OEM keys from work.

Yeah that makes more sense.  I wouldn't expect it to slow down noticeably.  I remember the days of reinstalling every year or 2 but since using SSDs my systems have all stayed day-one-fast forever :D
