Cheap reliable 1 TB hard drive?

h3rm3s

Hello everyone!

I need a pretty cheap 1tb hard drive. I'll be using it as a server storage solution (for non professional use). So I'd like it to be reliable, but I assume server grade hardware is pretty expensive, so it may be consumer grade. Also, should I go with an external hard drive, or with a 3,5 inch internal SATA hard drive and a SATA to USB adapter (which I still have to buy). My budget is like around 60 euros. Also, it would be awesome if the store ships to Belgium (where I live).

Thanks in advance!

The WD Blue is a pretty good drive, usually around 40

Thanks! I'll look it up!

There seem to be a lot of people saying this! Thanks for the answer, I'll look into the drive!

Green drives only run at 5400RPM VS 720RPM on the Blue drives

You can't go wrong with 1TB Seagate Barracuda or WD Blue. They are both the same as reliability goes.

If the data you are storing is of value to you at all you might want to look at at least RAID1. Nothing hurts more than valued data that you care about being lost in to the ether.

I'll go against what everyone else is saying and say WD Red. Blues are fine but Reds are the kings of reliability in my book. Any drive that can survive, albeit not always, being dropped is reliable in my book

Sure, if it would be important data I'd go for an expensive solution. But it's not really important at all. Also, I have a pretty tiny budget, I only have some pocket money a 15 year old would get (because I'm 15 years old :)). And some money from a programming job.

Thanks! What's the difference between Blue or Green if I may ask?

Mainly the RPM speed, the WD blue runs at 7200 RPM vs WD green at 5400 RPM. The faster the RPM the more responsive the drive is. I myself have had both drives, I have 6 WD greens that have died over the past 7 years, I have yet to have a blue drive die on my in the past 5 years.

Greens are "low power", they run at 5400RPM and assume a might lighter workload.

Blues are 7200RPM, but still assume a "desktop" workload.

Reds are either 5400RPM or 7200RPM depending on the model, but assume 24/7 operation.

Blacks are 7200RPM and have a few optimizations to improve performance, but are still engineered towards the desktop user.

SE and RE drives are Enterprise and come with a better warranty, and are engineered for 24/7 heavy usage.

Thanks! That's useful! So if speed isn't really that important for me, I might better go for a Green (I assume they're cheaper).

Thanks! That's great info!!! Would I really notice the RPM when I won't use it very intensively? Because if not, I might want to go for a Green one.

For reliability avoid Seagate. Their failure rates are 2-3 times higher than WD and Hitachi
