I just got an Intel REDS2CV360 (36 port sas expander). I already had an LSI 9211-8i.

The controller card was flashed to HBA mode a long time ago, when I first got it.

Is there anything special I have to do to have them work together?

I hooked them up together and I don't see my drives anymore. I'm beginning to wonder if the cables i ordered the other week to connect the card to the expander were the right ones.... (so i'm looking into that).

Besides the cables... anything I am missing?

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

No, it should be plug and play. You have two SAS cables out from your RAID card feeding into the SAS expander. The rest of the ports are your outputs. You have power (the Molex) going into the SAS expander right?

yes I used the power cable that was in the box... should I use the molex power directly from the PSU?

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

It should work either way...I would try the molex from the PSU. Also try using the SAS cables that the expander comes with just to make sure it isn't your SAS cables.

I couldnt use the ones that came with it because they were too short... but I'll see what I can come up with.. the seller I got them from on amazon hasnt responded if they were forward cables or not.

Ah, I see. Yeah, the cables should work though. I would try the ones it comes with though, even if you have to leave the sas expander hanging in your case just to temp test it. It would be strange if your expander came dead on arrival though.

Connecting to my backplane, I misordered my sas cables and found out I needed forward cables, but this was going from SFF 8087 to sata. Going from SFF to SFF, it shouldn't matter since the technology is designed to function a certain way.

Unless going from the expander > backplane (or drives) you need a breakout cable, then it does matter.
