I personally don't think it's a very good idea. People online tend to get intimidated at the fact that there won't be any warranty, and it's pretty easy to get ripped off if you're buying blind without knowing whether or not the system works as it is supposed to. I've tried to sell custom PC's in the past, and the only times they sell are when you sell them for dirt cheap (so for a $1000 PC that was custom it'd probably sell for $250-400)

Not really true.
You can offer your service for customizing the configuration and than building it.
Whenever they have a problem with a component or anything they can bring them to where they were bought and you could service the person by replacing the part.

building custom computers for people you know works pretty well? (for people that live < 30 mins away)

the parts have individual warranties, so they call you if their pc is broken and you can do what you need to to fix it..

It doesn't quite have the appeal that it did 20 years ago when you could save a lot of money by custom building your own pc.  Now days you can't really compete with big pc vendors.  The only plus you get is that you know you're building with quality components, and everything is exactly what you wanted it to be.

i sell with confidence. if buyer has any issues send it back and ill figure out problem and depending on what it is i'll fix myself and send back to buyer. i sell in local area with if u have any issues with it at any time get a hold of me ill fix everything labor free. 99% of issue is software. but almost every part now a days has warranties so why cant you warranty something new?

It great if you doing with for close friends and family friends as most likely they are close by. The profit margin on cheaper builds (in most case) is really none if you count in labor/parts as you can't buy bulk at cheaper prices. This business only works if alot of people buying it so your profit margin is bigger, personally they are alot of bigger fish in market already and probs doing same thing as you and has more experience it will be much harder to sustain your business from a business point of view. If you doing this just for hobby go for it.
