Hi,

So I have been talking to a friend that streams as I need to get a new motherboard but from talking with my friend it seems I might be better off selling my 5960X and getting a z170 motherboard for about 50% of the price and getting a 6700k and using 32gb ram rather than buying a new x99 motherboard and using my 5960X and 64gb and paying double for a new motherboard than what I could get a z170 for. Now his reasoning for recommending this is because games don't need more than 4 threads and the extra 4 threads (hyper threading) you get on an i7 will be more than enough for streaming also apparently the improved IPC will help with higher FPS in games. Now keep in mind I use 2 Titan X's never going more than 2-Way as I don't find it worth it even Two pushes it for being worth it and I get about 160FPS on GTA V when playing maxed at 1440p I also use a single m.2 SSD and was getting upwards of 2gb/s on my old x99 board that unfortunately failed :( I don't want to go 5820k or 5930k as that wouldn't be worth it but the z170 is that much cheaper that it make it an extra option to consider. What do you think and also from what I understand the 6700k has 16 PCI-e lanes however the Z170 Chipsets adds another 20? so in theory I should still get 2gb/s upwards from m.2 (on a m.2 turbo slot up to 32gb/s) and my gpu's shouldn't be impacted much if at all running in x8 x8 as opposed to x16 x8 on my old board (I know you can do x16 x16 with the 5960X but my board was layed out more conveniently to use x16 x8) I need some help with this decision as I only have a few days to decide and at the moment I am completely unsure which would be the best option.

Thanks

I livestream on a 4790k with 16GB of ram and a 980ti and I have no problems. the 5960x will be a beast though, I really don't know how much you can sell it for.. I would just keep it and grab a new mobo, all you need is 16GB I never ever even touch that even while rendering, though it may be different with the more cores, i'm not sure.

honestly you'll be perfectly fine either way so its up to you:)

You should just keep the 5960X and get a new X99 mobo. If you have already gone Z170, you should try out Nvidia NVENC (a GPU-accelerated codec)

Yeah I never hit much over 40-50% CPU usage so it seems a waste as by the time games use all those threads my 5960X will be too weak so getting 600 back on it and getting a 6700k for 300 and a asus rog hero z170 for 170 is really tempting as I already got 400 refunded back for my dead motherboard it would put me 430 in pocket.

Already have the 5960X but I don't feel I will ever make use of all the cores I use to when I rendered on a daily basis but now I pretty much only game and do the odd render here and there so for streaming and gaming I don't know if a 6700k would be plenty.

I would probably overclock the crap out of it anyway lol as I use a custom loops with way too many rads and I use to overclock my 5960X up to 4.8ghz

don't buy a board like that.. its really not worth it, you're paying so much and it doesn't make sense price-performance especially if you're downgrading from a 5960x

£170 isn't that expensive for a motherboard where I live £400 is though which is what the higher end x99 boards cost the mid level ones cost around £280 though so still more expensive than z170

i live streamed with a FX 8320 @ 4.52GHz, 16GB of 1866MHz DDR3 RAM and dual HD 7950.... it worked just fucking fine at 1080p to stream at 720p 30FPS with the FX CPU doing the streaming....

If it were me and I received a refund, I'd get another X99 board and save me the hassle of trying to sell stuff.  My theory: better to have and not need than to need and not have - especally if I already own the stuff.  I don't typically downgrade.

Just One Man's Opinion.

If that 430 you'll pocket is money that you shouldn't have spent in the first place, then sure.

But if you're just being more economical, then just stick with the overkill set-up.

Trouble is on paper it's a downgrade not sure how big but that all depends on task but in real life performance both CPU's perform very closely as most stuff uses single threads or no more than 4 but the minute you put them at the same clock speeds and render the 5960X craps on the 6700k
