Hello!

So i recently upgraded my computer from some really bad 70$ amd gpu to a GTX 950.

When I had the old gpu, i could play a few games with acceptable fps like csgo ~70 fps with medium-low settings, LoL with 150fps on everything low. On high end games like Fallout 4, i had like 20fps, indoors.

When upgrading I was looking through alot of benchmarks, and those were getting really high fps on the games i played, csgo 150 on everything maxed out, same for LoL, and FA4 ~50fps maxed out, what i got was the same fps at most of the games. I now have ~80fps on csgo, with same settings, i got worse fps on LoL(never dropped below 60fps on old gpu, now constantly dropping and stable on 100 instead), but now I get like 40-70 fps on fallout instead,it just makes no sense. I think its because of my cpu since i have a potato cpu, but alot of people said to me that cpu dont affect fps that much.

This is my specs:

GTX 950 GPU, amd a6-6420k apu with radeon(tm) hd graphics CPU, 4gb RAM. (1440x900 screen and 460gb storage space if it matters)

What should I do? Should I upgrade?

Thanks!      Jon.

I'm thinking the CPU could be holding it back.

CSGO & LoL aren't exactly demanding games to run though.

@OP I presume you used DDU to uninstall the AMD graphics drivers before installing the Nvidia ones?

As others have said, the CPU is most likely the issue.

EDIT: When running games, monitor the CPU and RAM usage. If either is at 100% or close to, and the GPU is dropping in usage, then the GPU is being held back.

They are CPU bound games, especially with that resolution. That APU is a dual core, and it's not very fast.

I'm almost positive that you're being bottlenecked by your CPU. I'd look into newer, better options. Just note that a new processor will likely mean a new motherboard, since you'll probably want to get out of the FM2 chipset to start seeing performance.

This site will likely help a good bit. Just pick your motherboard + CPU budget, and go down until you hit said budget, and look into its recommendations (or similar combos).

According to the price tier that the GTX 950 sits, they suggest an FX 6300 or 6350, which are ~$100-130.

1. That CPU could be bottlenecking.

2. Did you plug your monitor into your motherboard or your GPU? (GPU is correct obv.) This is a pretty common mistake.

3. Not only would the CPU likely bottleneck the GPU, it would cause problems with CPU intensive games, so that thing should definitely be upgraded next.

Aye, but swapping to a more powerful GPU shouldn't negatively affect performance. Something else is the issue here. (although a new cpu would help improve fps overall, the negative impact OP is experiencing needs to be solved first)

The title is kind of misleading. I skimmed through the post honestly, and didn't see the part where they had reduced performance.

My full attention isn't to this thread anyways. Dealing with forum issues right now with the new upgrade.

Hello everyone!

Thanks for the help and tips, but i still have this issue regarding lower fps on LoL but higher and playable fps on Fallout? Any tips on solving that?

Thanks!   Jon

Hello!
so to be sure you checked everything said before:

- is your screen plugged on the GPU and not the Motherboard
- did you removed the previous driver correctly before intalling the Nvidia Driver?
- can you check your CPU activity to see if it max out while playing?

Also check if your graphic card is running at a correct temperature, maybe it is overheating somehow.

cheers.

+1 for CPU bottleneck. Fallout 4 especially will benefit greatly from more cores and more Mhz.

Since you already have a dedicated GPU, check out the FM2 or FM2+ Athlon quad-core chips (whichever your board supports). They are cheap and overclockable and would boost your rig considerably.

Your CPU doesn't have to max for it to bottleneck your GPU. Most stuff simply can't scale on MHz linearly, it will depend on threading, cores, cache, and IPC.

Yeah it's true,
a better way would be to check the load of the graphic card on the different games.

yeah, cpu gets to 100% on all games, probably need an upgrade, and someone mention here i need a new motherboard, i was planning to get a expensive cpu and keep the old motherboard, i had this one in mind: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-8350+Eight-Core

Or you guys recommend something else?

Thanks!

So the problem here is that your current cpu and motherboard utilize the FM2 socket, and the fx8350 uses a AM3+ socket. They aren't compatible with each other at all, so you would still need a new motherboard if you went with that cpu.

If I were you I would go with intel here. As much as I loved those fx cpus when they came out, they have not been updated in a long time and the newer intel stuff stomp all over them. Something like a lower-tier Haswell or Skylake i5 would probably suit you nicely (4460, 4590, 6400, 6500).

If your board is FM2 check out this CPU (though it out of stock at a lot of places because it's out of production): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113348

If your board is FM2+ then check out this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113379

It's the best you are going to do on your board. The A8 A10 etc APUs just include a GPU that you won't be using.

Hello!

I've been digging a bit, and i will buy this combo

CPU: AMD FX 6350
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 LE

Is this good? I still take suggestion.

Thanks!

To be honest, I really don't think that's a good idea. All the FX series processors are really aged at this point, and while it would be an upgrade compared to your current cpu, it just wouldn't last you very long at all. In fact, this video suggests that even a recent intel i3 would be a better bet than a 6300 (which the 6350 is basically the same as). I would really recommend going with something like an i5 4460 with a compatible cheap motherboard, even if it is a little pricier. In my opinion, any time you spent saving up for it would be well worth the money in terms of longevity of your purchase.

Hey!

Thanks for the suggestion, this is the motherboard that they suggest that will fit, but it turned out to be really expensive at the store i am buying at, and buying at amazon is not an option (they dont ship to where i live apparently, and same goes for other sites like ebay etc...) and the price is gonna be around 330€ (40€ installation because i am a dumbass and cant install a pc:D), and i dont have that high budget and i would like to same some money to like a scooter or something. I looked over some benchmarks on the i5 4460 and it is better than the amd, but is there any other options that has a lower price tag? Thanks!

P.S If anyone else have a suggestion for mobo/cpu, im happy to take them:D

EDIT: I found a comparison and it looks like the fx6300 got better clock speed, but still the i5 got better overall score, whats up with it? Is it coz the 4 core?
