SSD booting up like HDD

Hey guys, i have an Asus z170-pro with a samsung 950 M.2 ssd with windows 8.1 installed

when i start up my computer, it loads the bios screen (not BIOS its self but the screen to press f2) twice, then there is a 7-10 second interval where the screen is black with a underscore at the top left blinking.

then it starts windows 8.1 with typical SSD speeds.

what is going on? i have a sandisk 240gb ssd in my laptop and my laptop boots faster than my desktop

all my components are brand new, so im suspecting its something in the BIOS thats causing this lag. any advice?

Check if 'Quick/Fast boot' are enabled in your BIOS.

Also check if device initialisation is set to 'Full' or 'Partial' - could be waiting on a USB device or something to be ready.

Almost as cool as my temps

Perhaps check the manual if you can't find it, it's likely to help.

Are you sure the boot order is correct also? If it's spinning up 8 drives for something to boot before landing at your SSD it would be slow.

Check the boot order in the BIOS and make sure the SSD is first.

I would use this boot order:

SSD>USB>CD>HDD

PC Specs:

Core I5 4690K CPU
Gigabyte GTX 960 windforce 4GB GDDR5 GPU
Corsair 100R case
Seasonic 620W S12-II PSU
Kingston SSDNow 120GB SSD
Toshiba 1TB HDD
Asrock H97 Pro4 motherboard
8GB panram DDR3 1600 RAM
Windows 10 home 64 bit

it does this EVEN with the HDD unplugged

If you can't find the Device Initialisation setting, just unplug absolutely everything apart from power cable, display cable, and keyboard

Having a mega ton of ram can cause slow boots as well.

Like they already said make sure boot order is correct that can really slow things down. I think you said you did that already.

There is probably an option in BIOS to reduce how thorough the POST hardware check is, the less thorough the faster it'll be. You said its only a 7 second or so delay during POST then the rest of the boot is fairly fast... This kind of sounds like the dealio.

Could Windows be running in legacy BIOS mode? To find out, check here:

omg yes, it is running in legacy, but what does this mean?? :O

It means you need to reinstall Windows (preferably 10) in UEFI Mode

To do this, i would get your Windows 8.1 product key, and follow this guide HERE on how to make a bootable UEFI Windows 10 Install USB.
During setup, when it asks you for a product key, you can use your Windows 8.1 key and it will work just fine.

Hopefully this explains it

UEFI is just a much newer version of BIOS that supports things like fast startup and some other modern features.

Sure, but you have to clean install Windows in UEFI Mode.
