Hay guys just have a couple of questions on a NAS server im going to be configuring.

The NAS server i have is a N40L, so i have 4 hard drive bays (5 with a bit of modding).

Purpose: To store/stream media content, downloads and backups.

Current Config: 1x 1tb wd green (WD10EARS)

                            1x 2tb wd green (WD20EARX)

                            1x tb external hard drive

Future Plans: To have minimum 3tb of usable space. Have all my backups stored securely (i.e. if hd holding backups dies im not screwed)

Proposed Config: Purchase a 2tb Seagate Barracuda, add a 1tb Western Digital Blue(have one already)

Run both the 1tb wd green and 1tb wd blue in raid 1, and do the same thing for both the 2tb hard drives. Use the external hard drive to back up critical files in the server like my computer backups.

Questions: Any better alternatives to what i have proposed above?

Would u recomend having a raid with different hard drives (wd green with wd blue, and wd green with seagate barracuda). FreeNas will be my os.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, any input is much appreciated.

if a hard drive fails all my data is not lost?

would u say if i made a massive pool from my hard drives i will be better off?

It seems your current drives are already not in raid. Why not just leave the drives separate?

Drives in raid are just as likely to fail separately.

If you want to keep your data safe, you should be looking into raid 5.
